He doesn’t understand the eviction notice. He doesn’t understand the packed boxes or the tears. All nine-month-old Raiku understood was that his home, and the people he loved, were suddenly gone.
Now, in the echoing shelter, he waits. He is at an age where kittens blossom into cats, where playfulness turns to grace. But Raiku’s journey has been fractured. His world was exchanged for a kennel during the holidays, a time of warmth and hearth, leaving only the harsh, lonely feeling of a home lost.
It is a mystery that confounds even the shelter staff. Raiku, a stunning orange tabby with a spirit of pure gold, remains overlooked. Cats like him, sweet, young, resilient, are usually adopted in a heartbeat. But for some heartbreaking reason, his call goes unanswered.
Perhaps they see the space where his back legs should be. But if they looked closer, they’d see not limitation, but astonishing courage. They’d see a cat who doesn’t drag himself through life, but scoots toward you with hopeful determination. They’d see a soul completely unjaded by his pain, no fear, no bitterness. Just a profound, quiet yearning for a hand to stroke his head, a lap to curl into.
Yes, he can be timid at first. Wouldn’t you be, if a stranger held your future in their hands? But give him a moment, a gentle word, and he opens up. He unfolds like a flower seeking sun, revealing a purr that rumbles with gratitude, a head that bumps with desperate affection.
Raiku isn’t asking for pity. He’s asking for a chance. He’s asking for a quiet corner in a New York City apartment where the noise of the world fades away. He’s dreaming of a windowsill to watch snow fall, and yes, a fireplace to bask before, finally safe, finally still.
He has so much love to give. It’s spilling over, with nowhere to go.
Let’s get him seen. Let’s get him heard. Let’s turn his confusion into comfort, his waiting into wonder. Together, we can give this orange ball of love the simplest, most profound gift: a home where he can finally, finally be the cherished cat he was always supposed to be. He is with Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) in foster care at the moment. Please contact them if you’re interested!
