Friday's Myth vs. Fact 🐾

❌ Myth: Clipping a Double-Coated Dog Helps Them Stay Cool

✅ Fact: Shaving a double-coated breed can actually make it harder for them to regulate their body temperature. Breeds like Huskies, Samoyeds and other double-coated dogs are built for all seasons. Their undercoat and guard hairs work together to insulate against both heat and cold, trapping cooler air near the skin in warmer weather.

✂️ Shaving or heavy trimming disrupts this natural system and can increase the risk of overheating, sunburn, and even long-term coat damage. But this doesn't replace the fact that double-coated dogs will still blow out their undercoats and routine grooming is still necessary!

🐶 Better summer care tips: Regular brushing to remove loose undercoat, access to shade and fresh water, and avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat are safer ways to help your pup stay comfortable.

🐶 Staff Pet Spotlight 🐱
Meet Breezer, the 3-year-old Maltese who keeps life cozy (and occasionally chaotic) at home! Breezer belongs to Amelee, one of our Veterinary Assistants!

Fun facts about Breezer:
💙Breezer is a laid-back little guy with a strong appreciation for naps... but don't let that fool you. When fetch is involved, he is suddenly an athlete. He was rescued at just 5 months old and has been charming everyone he meets ever since. Breezer has a very special emotional support blanket that he loves to play with, snuggle, and generally rely on for comfort in all situations. His favorite spot to sleep is stretched out on his human's chest, where he doubles as a tiny, judgmental weighted blanket. He is also adjusting to life with his new brother, Rex, whom he tolerates with great patience and mild side-eye. What he lacks in motivation, he more than makes up for in heart, snuggles, and undeniable charm.

We love getting to know the pets who bring so much joy (and laughter) at home, just as much as our patients do here at the clinic 💙

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr. George Krienke, founder of Rice Pet Clinic, on May 6, 2026.

After serving in the military, George and his wife Joan moved to the Twin Cities, where he attended the University of Minnesota Veterinary School. He graduated in 1961 with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and spent his first year after graduation working on the Brucellosis Project for the Minnesota Veterinary School.

In 1962, Dr. George purchased five acres of land on the corner of Rice Street and County Road C in Little Canada and founded Rice Pet Clinic and Hospital. By 1975, he had built and moved into the clinic building many of us still know today — a milestone celebrated with a formal cocktail party in the lobby.

In 1991, his nephew, Dr. Tim Krienke, purchased the practice, beginning a new era while continuing the foundation of compassionate veterinary care that George established decades earlier.

Dr. George’s dedication, vision, and love for veterinary medicine helped shape Rice Pet Clinic into what it is today. His memory will continue to live within these walls as our staff remains committed to practicing quality medicine and providing exceptional care to our clients and patients.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Krienke family and all who knew and loved him. ❤️
