Yesterday I had the chance to spend the day at Black Horse Resort near Ocala, Florida, cheering on a friend and her three year old filly by Recon. She is not yet under saddle, but she is driving, hauling out, and taking in the world.
She was completely unflappable. New sights. Noise. Obstacles. Just steady.
That matters.
We know many love this breed for the show ring. High head, high step, presence. There is absolutely a place for that. But that is not why we breed.
Most people are not chasing ribbons. They are backyard trail riders looking for safe, steady partners. We trail ride. We relax. Our horses are how we exhale. We want horses the average owner can enjoy without constantly relying on a professional trainer. Because owning horses is expensive enough.
Recon has been the calmest trail horse I have ever sat on, and seeing that steadiness show up in his offspring felt like mission accomplished.
As many of you know, Recon has been sold and will be standing at stud in Denmark this April. We are downsizing and may not continue breeding each year, if at all. This season feels like passing the baton.
This is an endangered breed. Every registered foal matters. If our small program inspired even one person to breed thoughtfully and keep these horses in backyards, on trails, and in loving homes, then we did our part.
