Another Spring, another Bear PSA Post....
PSA: Bears are overpopulated in CT and they are attacking livestock.
Ellie was attacked by a bear in the early evening hours last week. She was dragged from her enclosure which was surrounded by 5 ft fencing. She suffered bite wounds to her neck and a fracture to her vertebrae. Though she fought hard for several days, Ellie eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Unfortunately, this kind of case has become common practice this time of year. We share it publically to highlight the reality of the bear problem in western CT. The bear population is out of control due to a lack of predation and migration from northern states. Other states have managed the bear population with controlled and limited hunting seasons. The state of CT has failed to pass a similar program for several years. Bears are destroying property, attacking pets and livestock, and even children in our area.
Bears are beautiful animals that deserve respect. However, allowing them to grow a population that they cannot sustain is not protecting them. It is setting them up for generations of behavior changes, starvation, disease, and injury.
To help prevent future cases like Ellie's, and to truly protect the bear population in our state, please do the following:
1. DO👏NOT👏FEED👏THE 👏BEARS 👏
2. Do not have bird feeders out in the spring, summer, or fall
3. Purchase bear-proof garbage cans and use them as directed.
4. Contact your local representatives and encourage them to vote for a limited and controlled hunting season
5. Protect livestock with electric fencing.
6. Keep all livestock feed in bear-proof containers
