It’s snowing and it’s 19° with a real feel of 6°, and the wind is blowing. Our horses go out for a minimum of 10 hours unless it’s freezing rain or very cold and rainy. (think 38° and rain, yuck)
Why do we do that?
🔹 Social interaction and mental wellbeing. Horses are social creatures. Ours are especially social with each other and us human care takers. They need to be interacting with each other!
🔹 Reducing the risk of respiratory issues from stale stable air. All barns should be well ventilated, but it’s inevitable that with horses stalled constantly that there will be some unpleasant aromas.
🔹 Prevents stocking up from long term stall confinement. I have a couple of horses here that get puffy when stalled excessively. The movement from being outside helps reduce that!
🔹 Movement + hay + water = happy horse belly’s. Constant access to forage is absolutely essential to their gut health, nobody will ever change my mind on that. These guys get hay 24/7 365.
Yes, pasture preservation is always a concern. With the ground so frozen and reducing the area that they have access to, it’s really not a big concern to us. When it’s muddy we can hose their legs off when they come in.
Blankets - under 25° and windy they get 2 blankets. Although blanketing is a whole other debate, I won’t get into it. We do what works for our horses.
Water - heated if possible 💧
Hay - unlimited access
And that’s it, that’s how simple it is to keep these guys happy and moving.
It’s SO important for me that they have what they need to be happy. It’s my life passion. Some of these guys are currently unemployed, some are very happily working 3 days a week. They all have access to the same things.

While I understand that some people have different opinions, this is what works for US and our horses 😉 I wanted to share what’s worked for us 🙌🏻
Now we do have ONE horse that is quite the diva and isn’t appreciative of turnout. She will work herself into a tizzy over it. Working with our vet and staggering her turnout times has helped tremendously with that issue!
