Dog Training Tip of the Day 🐾

🔑 Consistency is Key! 🔑

Dogs thrive on routine and clear expectations. When training your dog, it’s important to use the same commands, hand signals, and rewards each time. This helps them learn faster and feel more confident in what you’re asking.

Remember: Short, frequent training sessions (5-10 minutes) are more effective than long ones, and always end on a positive note! 🐶✨

Do you have a dog that is full of energy and you need help learning how to manage that excitement in social situations. These behaviors—jumping, mouthing, and potentially mounting—are common in young dogs, especially those that haven't yet been exposed to proper impulse control.

While these actions can be frustrating or challenging, they are typically a sign that the dog needs more consistent training and guidance to learn appropriate ways to interact with people and other dogs.

Training techniques such as rewarding calm behavior, redirecting the dog’s attention, and teaching basic commands (like sit, stay, or leave it) can help a dog learn to manage its impulses. Over time, with patience and consistency, most dogs can improve their behavior and learn to engage in more controlled and polite interactions. It's also important to ensure the dog is getting enough physical and mental stimulation, as excess energy can contribute to these behaviors.

Dogs are wonderful companions, but they can sometimes throw us for a loop during walks. If your dog suddenly stops and refuses to move, it could be due to one or more reasons. Here are ten possibilities for why this might happen:

1-Instinct to Stay Close to Home: Especially in young dogs, they may feel safer near home.
2-Fear, Stress, or Anxiety: Dogs might stop to avoid encountering something frightening.
3-Anticipating the End of the Walk: Some dogs want to avoid returning home and ending the fun.
4-Your Walking/Training Strategy: Unintentionally reinforcing stopping behavior with your actions.
5-Comfort or Health Issues: Sore muscles, growing pains, or ill-fitting gear might cause discomfort.
6-Superstitious Behavior: Dogs may stop at spots where they had positive experiences in the past.
7-Interesting Smells or Sights: Sniffing familiar spots like other dogs' “pee spots.”
8-Lack of Motivation: Sometimes, dogs simply don’t feel like walking.
9-Over-Exercise: They may be tired and need a break from the physical exertion.
10-Social Desires: Stopping to greet other dogs or people during the walk.

10 Solutions to Get Your Dog Moving Again:
1-Be Patient and Supportive: Sit with your dog to help them feel safe and reassured.
2-Change Your Route: Alter the walk’s direction or mix up the route to make it more interesting.
3-Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog for moving forward, not stopping.
4-Practice “Stay” and Release Cues: Turn stopping behavior into a training opportunity by teaching “stay” and releasing them with a cue to move.
5-Create Motivation: Temporarily “leave” your dog (under supervision) to encourage them to follow.
6-Reduce Pressure: Act distracted (like being on a phone call) to ease pressure and help your dog relax.
7-Teach “Touch” Command: Use this to guide your dog forward by having them touch a target with their nose.
8-Be Patient: Wait for your dog to make a move, then reward them for taking the next step.
9-Teach “Let’s Go” Cue: Use this phrase as a command to get moving and reward when they follow.
10- Try the Leash-Length Game: Encourage small movements and reward them for progressing.

Tips for Success:
Avoid constant leash pressure to prevent your dog from associating the walk with discomfort.
Don’t use treats as lures, as this can encourage dependence.
Plan longer walks when you have time to work through stopping behavior.
Practice these techniques before a walk becomes difficult to manage.
By staying consistent and patient, you can help your dog develop better walking habits!

Wow How Exciting!!
Your having a baby!!!

Make sure you work with your dog prior to the babies arrival to make things easier to acclimate to.

Work on obedience, calming exercises, get the baby used to a place/bed vs sitting on your lap so you can do what is needed with the baby safely!

If all goes to plan, your pup will soon decide your baby is part of the family and will accept them as a part of the pack. Even if your pup and baby bond quickly, never leave them together unattended. Likewise, while your baby grows and adjusts to life in this world, avoid letting your dog lick your baby to prevent the spread of germs.

Having concerns about when your baby arrives, I can help you!! Set up an appointment today!!

🎤⬇️ BUT....the really tricky thing with this is we can also reward what we do NOT want and that can start a whole new issue.
Timing is key.
Is there another behaviour being shown when you reward ❓If a dog jumps to get a reward, have you inadvertently rewarded using paws on you?
If there is barking, have you accidently begun to reward that ? Even with touch?
Every dogs reward system is different, many dogs will enjoy food while others really do have their own currency, such as a toy or praise.
