Today's Shatter the Darkness December post is sponsored by Sponsored by Companion Animal Hospital Companion Animal Hospital We thank you for your partnership and support for restorative care for girls aged 12-17 here in Michigan.
Boys are trafficked too. There is this heavy myth that only girls are forced into s*x slavery, but new studies show that in children, males are just as likely as females to be at risk of s*x trafficking. Most people think that because they are boys they can get away from it or that if they don’t get away they are not asking for help. But the truth is that boys have the same vulnerabilities as girls, especially as children, they all have basic needs that when not being met leaves them susceptible to coercion and threats of traffickers. The outcries of males are often overlooked or misinterpreted due to the fact that people are unfamiliar with the signs and symptoms of s*x trafficking, and because of the stigma surrounding boys in trafficking situations.
We, as a community, need to see these young men and start developing long-term residential safe houses for boys. These males need restoration the same as their female counterparts, and we have failed them in society. Our communities should be providing for the basic needs of these boys, as well as a safe place to teach life skills, provide mentorships, trauma informed therapy, legal assistance, education and job opportunities. Treatment for any survivor of s*x trafficking should address trauma bonding which can happen when a victim develops a strong loyalty and compassion toward their abuser. This is the main reason why survivors constantly go back to the trafficking situation, and some refuse to testify against their trafficker. Please continue to be on the look out for the signs of s*xual abuse and exploitation and don’t turn a blind eye to the people in our community that need restorative help.
