Do y’all have those dogs ready for dove season?

Dove season heat is HARD on a dog, don’t let your ego ruin a young dog. Set him up for success. You don’t have to pick up every bird, and he doesn’t have to hunt all day to prove anything.

If he gets tired, put him up. If he’s overwhelmed, slow it down. If he simply isn’t ready yet, leave him at home.

There will be plenty more hunts. Build the dog you want for years to come instead of trying to prove something on opening day.

Blue is learning the mechanics of multiple marks before we ever ask him to run them as true multiples.

Here we have a triple set up, but we’re running it as bird-in-mouth singles. Each time Blue returns with a bird, the next mark is thrown while he still has the previous bird in his mouth. This allows us to introduce the picture and mechanics of a multiple while keeping each retrieve simple and successful.

Right now, the goal isn’t testing memory it’s building confidence, momentum, and teaching him to come out of one retrieve ready to immediately identify and focus on the next fall.

As his understanding develops, we’ll begin asking him to remember more of the picture and eventually put all three birds together as a true triple.

Teach the concept before you test the concept.

Buck is starting to pick up some triples in the field while we continue developing his casting in the yard. Soon enough, we’ll start throwing some blinds into the mix and begin bringing the two together.

Just because we’re working on new concepts in the yard doesn’t mean our field work has to stall. We can continue building on his marking concepts, memory, and confidence while keeping that momentum up in the field, all while developing the tools we’ll need for more advanced work in the yard.

Keep building the tools. Keep building the dog. Keep moving forward.

We’ve got Blue here picking up some marks at distance!

Blue came to us a little later in life than some pups, and sometimes that presents a unique challenge. When a dog has spent most of its life only seeing hand thrown marks at 40–50 yards, they can hit a mental wall when you start stretching things out. It’s almost like they don’t believe the world gets any bigger than what they’ve always known.

That’s where confidence and repetition come into play.

Here we can see Blue starting to break through that wall, carrying himself farther, trusting what he saw, and finding success at distance. Every successful retrieve builds a little more confidence and teaches him that it’s okay to get out there and GO!

We’ll keep stretching him out and building on that confidence one mark at a time.

We received our new 5-shooter from Thunder Launcher today, so of course we had to let Zip give it a try this evening!

This was a pretty solid mark for a 6 month old pup. He drove into the area, established a hunt, stayed with it, and came up with the bumper. 💪

As he continues to develop, his marking will get sharper and he’ll learn to really use that nose once he gets into the area of the fall to pin those marks down quicker. That all comes with time, experience, and plenty of reps.

We’ve been really happy with what we’ve seen out of this little guy so far. He’s got plenty of drive, and he sure enjoys playing the game!

ZIP is still just a baby, but today he picked up his first hand thrown triple.

He has no idea what we’re really teaching him yet. To him it’s just another fun retrieve. To me, we’re building the communication that’s required for everything that comes later multiple marks, blind retrieves, and advanced concepts.

That communication isn’t built in a day. It’s built through thousands of repetitions, one retrieve at a time.

He’s a little ball of fire with all the desire in the world. As he matures, we’ll start stretching him out on longer singles, formalize his delivery to hand, and continue laying the foundation for the dog we know he can become.

The finished product starts with the fundamentals. Trust the process.

Buck is learning simple casting while building focus and consistency on the whistle sit. We’re keeping it simple now, laying the foundation before moving on to the T-pattern, where we’ll expand his handling skills.

Good handling dogs aren’t made overnight. They’re built one correct repetition at a time. With time, patience, and consistency, Buck will develop into a confident dog that can run blinds with precision and confidence.

Trust the process. The little things matter.

Throwback to two years ago August 2024.

My little buddy was already helping me on the Force Fetch table, teaching a dog to hold. He’s growing up around good dogs, hard work, and the process it takes to build a retriever.

It won’t be long before I can turn him loose and let him Force Fetch a few dogs for ol’ Dad. Watching him learn the craft has been just as rewarding as watching the dogs progress.

Passing this knowledge down means more to me than any ribbon or title ever could.
