Today, we’re featuring Dr. Blake Ballif, the Companion Animal Genomics Product Owner for Neogen.

Dr. Ballif received his PhD in Molecular and Human Genetics from Baylor College of Medicine. He spent 8 years working at a start-up human genetics company, focusing on diagnostic testing for chromosome abnormalities in children with intellectual disabilities and birth defects. Dr. Ballif later transitioned to canine and feline genomics, specializing in inherited diseases and traits, and helped launch the Paw Print Genetics brand. He has over 90 research publications, spanning companion animal genetics to molecular diagnostics.

A fun fact: he performed ancient DNA testing on Egyptian mummies!

Meet Dr. Helen Smith-Flores, our Associate Laboratory and Technical R&D Director! Dr. Smith-Flores earned her PhD from the University of Arizona's Genetics Interdisciplinary Program and later taught in the biology department at Gonzaga University. With 8 years of dedication to the Paw Print Genetics brand, she played a pivotal role in designing and validating our canine and feline tests. Dr. Smith-Flores is also a mother of four and a former collegiate softball player. We’re fortunate to have her expertise on our team!

Today we feature Dr. Rob Westra, who has been an Associate Medical Director at Neogen since 2020. Dr. Westra earned his DVM from Washington State University in 2008 and spent 12 years in small animal general practice and emergency medicine. Before that, he had a 10-year career in wildlife biology, working with tropical fish, Pacific seabirds, and coral reef ecology. Dr. Westra enjoys the Pacific Northwest outdoors and providing a lap for his dogs to sleep on. He speaks at many shows we attend, and if you've heard him, you know how knowledgeable he is in pet health genomics! 🧬
