Species Highlight: Rope Fish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus)
Appearance: Often confused with eels, Rope Fish have long, slender bodies that usually reach around 16" in captivity.
Origin: Native to slow-moving rivers and swamps across West and Central Africa.
Behavior: Rope Fish are very curious. They enjoy exploring crevices and love tanks with lots of hiding spots. They’re also excellent escape artists, so make sure your lid is tight! Rope Fish are social and enjoy the company of their own kind—often swimming or resting together.
Fun Fact: Rope Fish have both gills and primitive lungs! This allows them to breathe air at the surface as well as underwater. In the wild, this adaptation helps them survive in low-oxygen waters—and in your aquarium, you might catch them sneaking up for a quick gulp of air.
Diet: Rope Fish can be fed a variety of foods, including live or frozen bloodworms, shrimp, and small fish. Sinking pellets can also be offered to round out their diet.
Tank Requirements:
- Minimum 55 gallons (larger if keeping groups)
- pH: 6.5–7.5 with good filtration
- Water temperature: 76–82°F
- Secure lid to prevent escapes
- Peaceful tankmates (avoid anything small enough to be eaten)
We’ve got a great selection of Rope Fish in stock right now—stop in this weekend to check them out before they’re gone!
