The thing about having a good, trained horse, is that they don’t get that way by accident. They become bombproof by being exposed to the world, confident from learning to navigate through anything thrown at them, and you trust them once you’ve spent enough time with them to (mostly) predict their behavior.
My girl Peggy Slew has always been perfect. She is just a flat out gorgeous, sweet, hard trying unicorn. And she’s been put on the back burner way too much due to having foals and me keeping other horses going. I decided it’s her time to shine, have been putting in the work with her, and she’s been knocking my socks off.
She has moments of extreme confidence on trail and moments when she’d like the experienced horse to lead (pinch me, between Griffin and Tide I have TWO calm and confident trail horses). This is what I’d expect from a fairly green trail horse. What I didn’t expect is the way she’s been trying to eat hills for breakfast like it’s her job?! Peggy is an off the track thoroughbred and built like a brick house. I rein her in quite a bit because I want to build at the walk a little longer, but she’s making me think she might also like to try her hand at endurance someday 💁🏼♀️
