We had a trio of first-time visitors today! Only thing better than one Cockapoo is two Cockapoo's! First, say hello to 10-week-old sisters Pepper and Peanut! They are not finicky when it comes to treats and they love to play with their squealy toys. They were wonderful patients for Dr. Davidson and nurse manager Ali. Next, we got to meet the handsome Ryder! Ryder is an 11-week-old Yorkie who likes to munch on his Jerky cuts and likes to play with his squeaky balls. Ryder was a good boy for Dr. Hiller and nurse Kacey.
Please join us in welcoming them to the Crest View family!

With blue eyes that would make Sinatra jealous, this little fella came in this morning and stole some hearts! Please say hello to Tobin, an 8-week-old-Aussie who made his first visit to Crest View Animal Clinic today. Tobin likes to play with his hard rubber duckie and is learning his commands with the help of Zuke's Training Treats. He was a good boy for his visit with Dr. Sachs and nurse Candace and he didn't seem to mind getting passed around from one staff member to another for puppy lovin' (sometimes we just can't help ourselves)! Great to meet you, Tobin and we look forward to your next visit!

Please don’t neglect your dog’s nails. And don’t let them grow til they’re becoming an issue.
How often do you trim your nails?
Dogs’ nails become the first things to contact the ground when they walk, and this affects their comfort, their gait, and their personality.

“Oh rubbish....our nails don’t hurt when they grow.”
I hear you, but let’s look at why trainers, groomers, vets (really anyone who works closely with dogs) will urge you to please trim your dog’s nails or “claws”.

It isn’t always nice to hear but it is an important message.

What happens when your dogs nails are too long?
The toes can start to splay, they can spread our unnaturally.
This affects how the foot can move and place itself.

Did your dog’s toes once sit neatly and tightly together?
Have you noticed they now sit wider apart?
Notice those bigger gaps?
The foot isn't as compact as it one was.

Over time.... the toes can twist and they may have a new way of moving or walking, one their body isn’t built for and it can be very subtle and tricky to spot.

That new movement affects joints and muscles all the way up the leg.
Eventually.... it can impact the hips.
The gait can be affected as well as their whole walking style.

Why does this happen?
Dog nails don’t retract.
They stay long (and for long nails concrete walking may not help at all...it just means more pain).
Long nails can’t sink into hard surfaces.
The toes bend... the joints strain and the foot compensates in unnatural ways.

Will they show pain?
Some dogs will..... many don’t or can’t.
That doesn't mean they’re not in a lot of discomfort.

Pain often shows in unexpected ways...unwanted behaviour, movement and posture.
Pain that is preventable becomes a welfare issue.

We owe it to our dogs to help them live (as much as possible) a pain free life.

Yes...nail care can be hard.
Yes, some dogs hate it and progress can be snail pace slow.

However....we owe it to our dogs to not give up on them or their nails.

Top Pup, the sequel!
Today we had the pleasure of meeting Maverick, a 9-week-old Golden Retriever. He made his first visit (fly over) to Crest View Animal Clinic today. He was a tad shy at first, but warmed up nicely with treats from nurse Kacey and plenty of “awes” from the rest of the staff. He was a good boy for Dr. Davidson and nurse Kacey! Please join us in welcoming Maverick to the Crest View family!

Please join us in wishing our founding father, Dr. Harry Sachs, a Happy Birthday! We would take it easy on him today, but he's not here to give us the chance! Feet in the sand and iced tea in hand, wishing you a Happy Birthday, Dr. Sachs!

Thursday morning got off to a fluffy and wiggly start when Franny walked in the door.
Franny is a 17-week-old Berna doodle who made her first visit to Crest View Animal Clinic today. Franny is not particular when it comes to treats and she loves playing with her squeaky toys. She also has a new big brother at home to play with! Her brother, an Aussie mix, didn't know what to make of her at first, but they are warming up nicely. Welcome to Crest View, Franny and we look forward to your next visit.
Reminder: we are closed this Saturday so be sure you pick up any needed items prior to 5pm tomorrow.

This curious bundle of cuteness is George, and he made his first visit to Crest View Animal Clinic today. George is an 8-week-old Labrador Retriever who is lucky to have a 2-year-old big brother Labrador at home to help him learn the ropes. He has not decided on a favorite treat yet, but he did enjoy the cheese-whiz he got during his appointment. He loves playing with his puppy keys and he was a good boy for his visit with Dr. Davidson and nurse Lex. Please join us in welcoming George to the Crest View family!
