Farm Fresh Fit: More Than Just a Walk
Every Saturday at the Jonesborough Farmers Market, something meaningful happens—people show up, take a walk, and leave with more than just tokens. They leave with a sense of connection, movement, and fresh local food.
The Farm Fresh Fit Walking Program makes it easy to prioritize wellness while supporting local food. Participants of all ages are invited to walk a one-mile round-trip route during market hours to receive $5 in tokens to spend on fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, or mushrooms. Tokens can be used at both the Jonesborough Farmers Market and Boone Street Market.
Recently, we received a message from one participant that reminded us why this program matters so deeply:
“Today I walked the mile for the token. I skipped last summer altogether. Grief had ahold of me. But today, I walked that lovely mile. It wasn’t easy for this 70-year-old homebody.
The token was also my ticket to shop and talk to vendors. I bought a bunch of garlic from a man with a beautiful Hispanic accent. All the vendors were very impressive. But this bunch of garlic was a symbol, I suppose, of me open to happy again.
I hope they can find a way to keep us walking that mile and connecting, and living life.”
Thanks to a generous sponsor, we’ve received additional funding this year to help keep the program going a little stronger—and as always, ongoing support is appreciated to help this wonderful program continue to thrive.
Whether you walk for your health, your heart, or simply for a chance to feel more grounded on a Saturday morning, you are welcome here.
