Dr. Jess took a day to learn (I use that term very loosely) a new skill earlier this week, shame it was scheduled on the coldest day of the year (yay, warm clothes!). Proof your healthcare professionals do more than just work 🤣

Happy new year to all! In the spirit of making resolutions, are you leaving money on the table by missing out on feed rebates/programs and medication manufacturer's rebates? Do you know of any other fun rebates or discounts offered to horse people you can share?

I will always try to send medications home along with any rebates that are available online (Equioxx, Gastrogard, Prascend, Adequan, and Zycosan, to name a few that run throughout the year at different times).

Does your feed company offer a free bag or money back program? Many do, for instance:

Triple Crown offers a buy 15 bags, get $30 back mail-in program:
https://www.triplecrownfeed.com/frequent-buyer/

Sentinel/Kent/Blue Seal has their True Blue Club for free bags of feed: https://kentfeeds.com/true-blue-club/?utm_campaign=Sentinel%20Nurture%202024&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-9IioBvVH3FQTsXij0ZicfYyH11Q_Nl_qW3r9RGmYehh2pnKXTtRxq7DxfKDGzXNKvKPYu31lnBca-27iXPWAVeo2xGFg&_hsmi=311665346&utm_content=311665346&utm_source=hs_automation

Purina offers a coupon for a $15 off a bag of feed for a 30-day trial:

ProElite has a buy 12 bags, get 1 free program:

Nutrena offers a coupon for $25 off any one bag of SafeChoice, ProForce, or Empower horse feed:

There are also many discounts associated with memberships you may already have, including US Equestrian (USEF), AQHA, USDF, USEA, NTRA, and IHSA, for useful discounts for John Deere, Back on Track, US Rider driving coverage, and more!

With our Frequent Buyer Program, when you send in 15 proofs of purchase, receive a $30 visa gift card.

I didn’t write this but the struggle is real! Help your veterinarian help you by being a reasonable client. I’m lucky to have an awesome group of clients, but sometimes this still applies…

Compounded medication is a topic that veterinarians are frequently asked about, but we often struggle to explain, as the rules are very complicated. There are some situations in which compounded drugs are extremely useful and legal to use, and we have to be careful that we prescribe them in a manner that is in the best interest of the safety of our patients, while also following the laws set down by the FDA. Some examples:

1) It is illegal to prescribe a compounded medication for the sole purpose of saving money (for instance compounded pergolide suspension instead of Prascend tablets, or cheap compounded molasses-flavored bute powder when an FDA-approved orange-flavored bute powder exists).

2) It is illegal to prescribe a compounded version of a drug when an FDA-approved version is already available for that species in the same formulation and dosage (for instance compounded omeprazole granules or paste instead of Gastrogard paste).

3) Compounded medications may not be legally used in food animal species (it doesn't matter if that specific animal is meant to be eaten; if it is a sheep/goat/cow/pig/etc. its is considered a food animal). There are some small exceptions that come with a very very long withdrawal time, but this is not common. I'm looking at you, illegally compounded toltrazuril for coccidia in goats (we can use off-label equine Marquis instead, if species-specific medications like Corid have proven unsuccessful).

I realize this is a confusing topic, so I am attaching a compounding FAQ by the AVMA. Feel free to comment below with any questions!

Heads up regarding a change to medication rules for Regumate/altrenogest at USEF shows.

The U.S. Equestrian Federation has announced that as of Dec. 1, the use of progestogens in stallions and geldings while competing at USEF-licensed competitions will be prohibited under Chapter 4, Drugs and Medications, of the USEF rulebook. Progestogens are still permitted in mares.
