Big news from today’s farm call… and it wasn’t a horse 👀🐪
Confirmed pregnancy in this beautiful camel!
While horses are our main focus, reproductive work doesn’t stop there. Ultrasound, breeding management, and repro services can extend to a variety of species.
Always fun to put the skills to work outside the “usual” patients!

OSU couldn't have said this better. Our hearts hurt for the entire staff at Woodland Run and for the owners who lost horses there. This is any clinic's worst nightmare. They will be in our prayers as they begun rebuilding 💖

With foaling season in full swing, we decided it is perfect time to announce that we have been keeping a little secret 🙊

Please understand that we are going to be a little more cautious with palpating this year, which might just mean that stocks and/or sedation are needed. We are still here and committed to providing the best services to you and your family, while still keeping ourselves and our little one safe. Be on the lookout for our newest assistant next year! 🥰

Colic is not only for horses! 🐴 Like we have talked about before, these cold temps and weather fluctuations make for a perfect storm for dehydration. ❄️🥶 If you notice your animal is the slightest bit off, say something! Early intervention is key.

Thankfully, this camel has some great trainers surrounding him, and they noticed immediately he wasn't feeling well. 🐪 Camels are known to be very stoic and do not show their pain. An untrained eye would never know he was uncomfortable. His bloodwork was clean, and tonight, we got him set up with oral and IV hydration and electrolytes. 🩺💉

This guy can use some thoughts and prayers as he battles this, but he is a fighter!💖

🐴🍂 Fall Colic Alert from Veterinary Reproductive Solutions (VRS) 🩺🐎
As temperatures drop and weather patterns swing, we’re seeing an increase in colic cases—and we want to help you keep your horses healthy and comfortable.

👉🔍 What Is Colic?
“Colic” refers to abdominal pain, but the causes can vary—gas buildup, impactions, feed changes, or dehydration. Fall weather often creates conditions that make colic more common.

🍁 Why Colic Is More Common in the Fall:

🥶 Cooler temps = less water intake

🌡️ Rapid temperature swings cause decreased gut motility

🌾 Drying pastures reduce natural moisture in forage

🕰 Changes in routine/turnout schedule

💧🐴 Tips to Help Prevent Colic:
✔ Encourage Hydration:
💦 Fresh, clean water (even try offering warm water during cold spells!)
🧂 Electrolytes and probiotics
🌿 Soak hay or feed for extra moisture
🦷Ensure your horses have had their teeth evaluated by your veterinarian prior - improperly chewed forage can be a predisposing factor to some types of colic

✔ Consistent Feeding:
🍽️ Make changes slowly—no sudden hay or grain switches.

✔ Monitor Manure:
💩 Watch for decreased output or dry, firm manure.

✔ Keep Them Moving:
🏃‍♂️ Regular turnout + exercise = a happy, moving gut.

✔ Watch the Weather:
🌬️ Cold snaps can reduce water intake—be extra observant.

📞🩺 Why Keeping Your Vet in the Loop Matters:

💉Early intervention is key! The sooner we evaluate and enact a treatment plan, the better chance we have at beating your horses colic.

We do offer emergency services at VRS, but we’d much rather evaluate a horse early than get called when things have gone too far. If your horse seems:

😕 “Not quite right”

🚫 Drinking less

🐎 Acting uncomfortable

🔄 Showing any unusual behavior
…please contact us right away. Early intervention saves lives.

❤️🐴 Your horse’s well-being is our priority. VRS is here for you this fall and all year long.

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!

🐴 Exciting News from Veterinary Reproductive Solutions 🐴

We’re thrilled to announce that we now provide oral exams and dental floats for your horses! 🦷✨

Why are regular oral exams so important?
Annual dental care is key to maintaining your horse’s health and performance! Healthy teeth not only improve comfort but also help with:

✅ Identification and early treatment of cavities, infected roots, sharp enamel points, hooks, and other oral lesions
✅ Preventing painful conditions and improving your horse’s ability to chew and digest food properly
✅ Enhancing performance, especially for athletic horses who rely on every bit of comfort!
✅ Detecting and removing loose, infected or fractured teeth before they cause a much larger problem

🔴 Geriatric Horse Care 🔴
As your horse ages, monitoring their dental health becomes even more crucial. Dr. Ariana will assess any tooth loss and ensure the remaining teeth are worn down evenly to prevent discomfort and imbalance. Keeping older horses’ teeth in check helps them maintain their appetite and overall well-being! Older horses with poor dentition are at higher risk of choke and colic; just another reason to keep up on their regular dental care!

Don’t wait for signs of discomfort—schedule an annual exam to keep your horse’s mouth healthy and happy for years to come. 🐴❤️
