Ask us about what vaccine protocol makes the most sense for your animals! Whether you have an old pasture ornament, a traveling athlete, or your trusted 4H babysitter, we are happy to discuss what makes the most sense at your annual exam! Give us a call or email to get scheduled!

Spring is almost here! Which means…it's time to schedule your equine companion to receive their spring vaccinations!

If you are wondering what vaccinations your equine friend should receive, the answer is — There are no “one size fits all” vaccine recommendations. A veterinarian who knows your animal and your management system is your best resource to recommend what vaccines your equine should receive and with what frequency!

While vaccination does not prevent disease in all circumstances, a good immunization protocol minimizes the risk of infection and remains an essential component of responsible ownership. A vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for a yearly check-up of your equine friend and a great way to catch any health concerns early.

If you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

How is foal watch going for everyone else? 🐴
Rumchata says she is ready to get this baby out! She has shown significant progression over the last few days, with some serious hind end relaxation, udder and teats swelling, and fetal rotation as she gets closer to her due date. 🗓

We would love to see photos of your expecting mamas or new babies! When is your mare due? 🐎

Brrr! 🥶
With some of the frigid temps we've been experiencing, leave it to our animals to decide that it's time to kick off baby season! 🐴🐑🦙

It's very important to make sure our livestock and pets are warm and hydrated to prevent unwanted illnesses! These new babies are so fragile. If you're expecting soon, take some time to grab some extra straw, blankets, and an emergency plan to keep them warm!

If you are experiencing any difficulty with an animal and need assistance, please feel free to reach out and we can discuss setting up a consultation.

Now is the time to start planning for your open mares you're intending to breed! Getting started on lights in December, a breeding soundness exam some time in January, with a culture/sensitivity to ensure you're ready to start breeding in February!

It may seem like there are a lot of days between now and the beginning of breeding season, BUT we are just FIVE weeks from the beginning of foaling season AND we are under 80 days until the breeding sheds open. Please check out this infographic Gabi Sutton Vermeulen made during a past equine reproduction lab on lighting. Mares often don't cycle until April or May naturally. So if you have open mares that you plan to breed early, you will need 60-90 days of artificially lighting BEFORE breeding. Its TIME to get started!! Whether you bring your mare in a stall with lights on a timer or invest in a light mask, you will be more successful this breeding season if you start planning now!!

Starting in 2025, Dr. Ariana Dadario will be offering reproductive services to the western and central areas of Ohio. Located in Lima, we are excited to have a facility to house mares for breeding and hope to offer foal watch services as well. Dr. Ariana is a 2018 graduate from the University of Findlay's animal science program and a 2022 graduate from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has always had a strong interest in reproduction and grew up riding huntseat. Naturally these two passions have combined and formed her loved for equine reproductive medicine. Pictured here are her two horses Mystic(left) a 20 year old Quarter Horse gelding that has lived his entire life with Dr. Ariana and her family and Rumchata(right) a 10 year old mare currently used for breeding.
Our work is not limitted to horses! Dr. Ariana also enjoys the occasional ruminant case and is happy to assist with some cattle and goat work as well. She enjoys pulling calves and goat kids, and can even perform a ruminant c-section if necessary.
If you are considering breeding and need some assistance, feel free to reach out for a consultation!
