In the past week, two of my four-legged clients in Libertyville have contracted leptospirosis, a rare, but very serious, bacterial infection that passes to your dog through contact with the urine of wild animals like skunk or rabbit. Both dogs will likely survive, but if not caught in time, lepto is often fatal. Many pets who recover are left with permanent kidney and liver damage.
Signs of infection include decreased urine production, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. My client described her normally exuberant one-year-old dog as “almost dead with fatigue.”
This PSA is not to frighten anyone, but just to make you aware that this is out there and reported infections are on the rise.
Take care of your fur babies and be safe ❤️
