Did you know October is Pit bull Awareness Month? While the Liberty Animal Shelter does not currently have any Pit Bull type canines available for adoption, we would like to share some myths regarding this breed type.

The Liberty Animal Shelter has cared for nearly 500 dogs this year, and roughly 20 percent have possessed predominate physical characteristics of bully type canines.

All dogs, including pit bull type dogs, are individuals. It is imperative to treat them as such and to provide them with the care, training, and supervision they require. All canines should be judged by their actions and not only by their DNA or their physical appearance to ensure that dogs and people can continue to share safe and happy lives together.

As the end of year holidays and festivities approach, Liberty Animal Control would like to offer some crate training tips to help keeping your animals safe and sound.

When life gets crazy or stressful for your dog, it can be helpful if they have a safe place to go where they can avoid excessive excitement or getting too many snacks or the wrong kind of snack from unknowing visitors.

🐾 What is a Crate? A dog crate is usually a plastic or collapsible metal enclosed pen that is just large enough for a dog to stand up and turn around.

🐾 Why Use a Crate? A crate is a great way to keep your dog safe while you are away from home. It can also help teach your dog to control their bladder and only associate elimination with the outdoors. Your dog might also enjoy having their own space where they can go when feeling stressed, tired or not feeling well.

🐾 How to Crate Train your Dog.
-- Crate training can take days or sometimes even weeks, so dedication and patience is key.
-- Start by allowing them to enter the crate freely; placing treats inside the kennel is a great way to get them to enter the crate.
-- Set up the crate so that your dog associates a pleasant feeling with it, you can do so by placing a favorite toy or enrichment in the crate with them.
-- Once your dog is comfortable freely entering the crate, leave them in the crate for short periods of time while you're home and while you're away. Slowly increase the amount of time in which your dog is crated and reward them upon your return. This build your dog's association with the kennel in a positive manner.
-- Offer different types of enrichment to give them them something to do as well as decreasing stress. Here are several examples of different enrichment that we recommend offering your pet while they are crated.

Wildlife belong outdoors. Last week, Liberty Animal Control Officers responded to a residence to remove a Rat Snake located in a resident's finished basement. The Liberty Animal Control can assist with the removal of wildlife from inside your residence; however, we are not permitted to relocate them off of your property. For wildlife intrusions in unfinished areas of your home, please contact a pest removal company. If you are unsure if we are able to assist you please give the shelter a call at 816.439.4791.

According to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats in the US are overweight. The Liberty Animal Shelter utilizes the Purina Body Condition Scale to evaluate animal's nutritional needs. Obesity in animals can lead to several health issues including, arthritis, hip dysplasia, heart disease, hypothyroidism and Cushing's disease. Overweight animals can have issues breathing, participating in activities, heat intolerance, a reduced lifespan and an overall decrease in their quality of life.

Say hello to this sweet momma kitty and her babies! They were found in a trailer park and brought to the shelter so they could have a safe place to stay. Momma's babies make just two of the 16 kittens at the Liberty Animal Shelter (in addition to a few puppies too)!

It is so important to spay and neuter your pets to proactively prevent unwanted litters and address the overcrowding challenge - it's preventative care at it's best!

🐾 Every animal adopted from Liberty Animal Shelter is spayed / neutered before going to their new home.
🐾 If you have a pet at home that needs to be spayed / neutered, there are low cost clinics that make providing veterinary care, including sterilization, more affordable.
🐾 If there are stray and or feral cats in your area contributing to over population, the Liberty Animal Shelter offers live trap rentals to Liberty residents.

For more information on low cost spay/neuter clinics and or live trap rental, contact shelter staff at 816.439.4791.
