What to Expect When Shaving a Matted Dog⁉️
Shaving a matted coat is a necessary, humane step to relieve pain. Tight mats pull on the skin and trap moisture, f***s, and urine.
Removing them immediately improves your dog's comfort, but requires special care.
〰️During the Shave〰️
▪️Increased Injury Risk: Dense mats hide skin folds, warts, and moles, increasing the risk of accidental nicks or cuts.
▪️No Heavy Brushing: Brushing out severe mats is too painful, making shaving the only safe choice.
〰️After the Shave〰️
▪️Revealed Skin Issues: Shaving will likely uncover hidden hot spots, sores, infections, or parasites.
▪️Temporary Irritation: As blood flow returns, your dog will experience a "pins and needles" sensation and redness.
▪️Behavioral Shifts: Expect brief hiding, lethargy, back rolling, or frantic licking as they adjust to the sudden weight loss of the coat.
〰️Your Post-Shave Responsibilities〰️
🔺Stop All Scratching: Do not let your dog scratch, chew, or rub on furniture, as they can quickly cause self-inflicted wounds.
🔺Use a Cone: Utilize an e-collar if your dog will not stop licking or chewing.
🔺Prevent Future Mats: Brush your dog regularly to aerate the skin and stick to a strict grooming schedule.
⚠️ Warning Signs: When to Call a Vet ⚠️
Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice:
🐾 Hematomas: Swollen, fluid-filled, or purple-bruised ear tips caused by blood rushing back to the vessels.
🐾 Severe Lethargy: A dog that refuses to eat or remains hidden for more than 24 hours.
🐾 Oozing Skin: Areas that look raw, weep fluid, emit a foul odor, or look increasingly angry and red.
🐾 Unstoppable Scratching: Intense self-mutilation that you cannot stop with a cone or distraction.
