As temperatures climb, the risk of heatstroke for our beloved dogs rises, too. 🐶🔥 Dogs can overheat far faster than humans, especially during exercise, car rides, or warm days. Watch closely because early recognition can save lives.

Signs of heatstroke to monitor:

🚨 Excessive panting or drooling
🚨 Bright red gums or tongue
🚨 Weakness, staggering, or collapse
🚨 Vomiting or diarrhea
🚨 Confusion or glazed eyes

If you notice these signs:

🛑 Move your dog into shade or a cool indoor space immediately.
🛑 Offer small amounts of cool (not ice‑cold) water.
🛑 Apply cool, wet towels to neck, chest, and paws.
🛑 Call your veterinarian right away, it’s an emergency!

⚠️ High-risk groups: brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs and Pugs), senior dogs, overweight pups, and those with health issues are especially vulnerable.

Let’s all commit to keeping our companions cool, hydrated, and safe this summer. Together, we can enjoy the warmest months with confidence. 💦✨

🐝 My pet got stung by a bee, now what?

Summertime means sunshine, flowers, and yes... bees. For curious dogs and cats, that can lead to painful stings. Here's what to do if it happens:

1️⃣ Look for a stinger. If you spot one, gently scrape it off with a credit card or fingernail. Avoid tweezers. Squeezing the stinger can release more venom.

2️⃣ Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain.

3️⃣ Ask your veterinarian if Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is safe for your pet and get the correct dosage. Never give it without consulting your vet first.

4️⃣ Watch for serious symptoms:
🚨 Vomiting
🚨 Facial swelling
🚨 Difficulty breathing
🚨 Weakness or collapse

These could indicate an allergic reaction and require immediate veterinary care. Some pets may need oxygen, fluids, or emergency medications.

Bee stings can range from mild to life-threatening. Quick action and vet guidance make all the difference. Stay safe this summer!

Make sure to take care of your pets, and yourselves, in this extreme heat.

It's HOT!! Take extreme care with your pets in this weather! Remember, an estimated 50% of heat stroke dogs do not survive, even with treatment. Prevention is key!
1. Only go on short walks, and only early morning and late evening, and stay in the shade as much as possible.
2. Even young, healthy dogs can get heat stroke if exercised in the heat, even if they are used to lots of exercise.
3. Signs of heat stress (you may see just one or two of these): excessive panting, hanging head, drooling, slowing down on walks, refusing to walk, red mucus membranes, diarrhea or vomiting, collapse
4. If you think your pet is overheated, move them to a cool area, pour cool (not cold) water on their neck and abdomen (It's a good idea to keep a water bottle with you for this purpose), and get them to the vet immediately. Do NOT put them in ice water.
5. Keep animals inside if possible. If they do not have access to the indoors, they need plenty of water and deep shade.
6. Be aware of hot concrete/cement that can burn foot pads.
7. Do not leave your dog in your car. Just do not do it. We see more deaths from this than anything else.

Let's have a fun and safe summer, everyone!

Former Canine Educators Briggs and Trixie took advantage of the beautiful weather with a walk through Happy Hollow—sniffing trails and soaking in the summer air.

If your pets are enjoying the great outdoors too, remember to keep them protected:
💧 Leptospirosis spreads through contaminated water like puddles and stagnant streams—make sure your pet is vaccinated.
🦟 Ticks are also active—use preventives and check your pet thoroughly after every adventure.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and enjoy summer like Briggs and Trixie do!
