Our wonderful Icelandic Sheepdog became Britain’s latest pedigree breed!
"A dog breed cited by Shakespeare and believed to be more than a thousand years old is set to be recognised by the Kennel Club for the first time.
The Icelandic Sheepdog is the Nordic country’s native breed and has ancient origins, having been referred to in the Sagas – the country’s most famous literary export, which detail events from around 50 years either side of 1,000AD.
The breed is thought to be the descendant of the dogs brought to Iceland by the original Viking settlers to herd livestock in the ninth century.
It is also one of the few to have been mentioned in a Shakespearean play, with soldier Ancient Pistol uttering the phrase, “Pish for thee, Iceland Dog, Thou prick-ear’d cur of Iceland,” in the second Act of Henry V."
