Sometimes dogs come into our lives for one reason or another, and for this rescue, Ronan has always been a pivotal mascot. In 2018, Birmingham Humane Society reached out about a young male Akita who had been adopted and returned four times. Trash stealing, counter surfing, general juvenile delinquent behavior. When he came to us, we realized he was going to most likely be a permanent foster because I couldn’t imagine who would be crazy enough to take on this dog. But, he had a way of wiggling into your heart. He never meant any harm. His actions were never stemmed from any aggression or dangerous behavior. He was just, Ronan. He developed a pretty severe skin issue that we spent the better part of a year trying to figure out, but at the end of the day and tons of money later, we realized he was highly allergic to many common foods. So great….quirky, wild, barky, food allergy dog…never getting adopted. Well life goes on and the years pass. Ronan ended up being moved to Sue and Phil’s beautiful farm in Carnesville where he had the space to run on trails and enjoy what we thought might be the rest of his life. We struggled over the years to make his boarding costs happen, but somehow, it always worked out. Fast forward to a month ago, and an absolutely amazing, selfless, and probably a bit crazy (I say with love) repeat adopter messages me and says, I want to try Ronan. I say, are you ok? Hah. Well, lots of conversations ensue, and today, Ronan has his first ever shot at being someone’s pet and companion. We will support Ronan financially because it’s a big burden to take on with his skin issues, but we just can’t find the words to express how this situation - Ronan- exemplifies everything we wanted to do in rescue. We may not pull the quantity of dogs that others do, but when we commit to a dog, we commit. Seven years Ronan has waited. And now, Kristine has given him this chance. Stay tuned for lots of updates in the future.
After 7 years, and a bit more gray faced, happy gotcha day, Ronan!
