High in the mountains of Costa Rica lies Territorio de Zaguates, a sanctuary unlike any other. Known as the “Land of the Strays,” it provides a home for more than a thousand rescued dogs, all free to roam acres of open countryside. Unlike typical shelters, this place offers dogs space, freedom, and constant human interaction.
Territorio de Zaguates is a no-kill shelter, meaning no animal is euthanized due to age, breed, or condition. Instead, the dogs live in large, natural spaces with shelter, food, and care—waiting to be adopted, but never pressured to leave. Many of them are mixed breeds, often celebrated with creative, playful names that highlight their uniqueness.
Visitors are encouraged to hike the scenic trails with the dogs, creating a joyful, chaotic parade of wagging tails and excited paws. The experience is not only therapeutic for the animals but unforgettable for the people, who often find themselves bonding with a future companion during these walks.
