❄️ Winter Hoof Care Reminder ❄️

This ice and snow has been hanging around for almost two weeks now… or at least it feels that way 😆🥶 And while we’re all over winter, our horses’ hooves still need some extra attention during these conditions.

🧊 Ice and snow can pack into hooves, creating painful ice balls that affect balance and increase the risk of slips or injuries.
🐴 Check hooves daily and clean them out regularly.
🛠️ Consider pads, snowball preventatives, or proper traction if your horse is shod.
🏠 Keep turnout areas and walkways as safe as possible, and watch for changes in movement or soreness.

Cold weather doesn’t mean hoof care takes a break—if anything, it’s more important than ever. Stay warm, stay safe, and give those hard-working hooves a little extra love this winter! ❤️🐎

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Thoroughbred Makeover, and it’s hard to believe I’ve been lucky enough to volunteer as the farrier for 8 of those years. It’s been such a fun and rewarding experience — from the amazing horses to the incredible people I’ve met from all over the country. Every year brings new faces, friendships, and stories, and I’m grateful to be part of such a special event. Here’s to many more years of the Makeover! 🐎🔥

Excited to be back for my seventh year volunteering at the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover! It’s always such a enjoyable experience to watch these incredible athletes transition to new careers and thrive with their new skills. Every year I’m impressed by the dedication of the trainers and the resilience of these horses. Looking forward to another memorable event!

Today, we had to get a bit creative for Bear. As he ages, his hoof growth has slowed, and his right front sole was a bit pr*****ed, requiring extra protection and support. With age, Bear has developed arthritic changes, making an omnidirectional breakover essential to help him move more freely. Once we applied the first one, Bear's happiness was evident—he started nodding and licking in approval. It was awesome to see him so comfortable.

Every year my man Chip Lake comes down from Michigan to help out with the RRP. I could not do it without him. I appreciate all your help brother. What other job do you hang out with your friends and play with fire.
