We would like to introduce everyone to BUSTER!
Buster is a little fella, who found himself running as a stray. Two weeks ago, Buster had no family and no one to keep him safe, inside. He was running on the main roads and sadly was hit by a car. The driver stopped, as did another driver. The driver called his dad, who arrived at the scene and immediately took the dog to the nearest vet. He had no chip. An xray revealed a broken pelvis and a quote from
CVS (Carolina Vet Specialists) was way out of the ballpark, for what the drivers family could pay, especially considering the dog wasn’t theirs and they hoped an owner would come forward. The vet wanted to euthanize but gave the family some time to find any other help available.
We were contacted. Miracles happen every day, but we wanted to consult with our vet partners before making the decision to euthanize. CVS or NC State, Virginia Tech will all consulted. The cost to repair a broken pelvis is anywhere from $8000 to $15000, depending on the repair. We reached out to one of our vets, sent the X-rays and we opt’d for crate rest for 12 weeks. Buster also has 3 broken ribs, not originally mentioned by the first vet. We will never keep any animal here, if there are any doubts about their pain level or care we can provide.
We moved Buster to one of our dedicated foster homes from the first vet. He went last week for his first meeting with them.
Our vet said that he may eventually have to have that back leg amputated as he may (but may not) have nerve damage. Time will tell. Dr. McCaskill at The Country Veterinary Hospital recommended that we go ahead and neuter him and while under, they would see if they could move around the pelvis, at all. Sadly, they could not. The ribs will heal on their own. The pelvis will heal and he will have a little different walk, but as long as he isn’t in pain, we will make sure he gets what he needs till he can be adopted. He is on pain meds for the remaining 10 weeks and has been previous. He is now fully vetted! Up to date on vaccines, neutered, heartworm negative and chipped. He LOVES other dogs and wants to constantly be playing, even though his foster is having to keep him confined. He loves people and when able, he enjoys his free time, out of his crate, attached to her lap. He can pee/poop on his own. This boy wants to live! He’s a Jack Russell mix, about 15 #.
