Trick-or-treat is Saturday, Central Kentucky. So let's talk about the Halloween stuff nobody warns you about. 🎃

Everyone knows chocolate is bad for dogs. But the real Halloween hazards? They're the ones sitting on your porch right now:

🎃 THE JACK-O-LANTERN PROBLEM - Pumpkins start rotting about 2-3 days after carving. A moldy pumpkin can cause serious stomach trouble for a dog who "just ate a little." And a candle inside one is a burned nose waiting to happen. Flameless candles. That's the whole tip.

🍬 THE CANDY BOWL - Chocolate is the famous danger, but sugar-free candy and gum often contain xylitol, which is far worse and hides in plain sight. Wrappers cause blockages even when the candy itself is "just" sugary. Keep the bowl high, keep the lid tight, and put the dog in another room during trick-or-treat hours - a constantly ringing doorbell plus an open door plus a stressed dog equals an escape waiting to happen.

Space heaters come out of the garage. Candles return to every table. The fireplace gets its first lit night of the year. All cozy - and all brand new hazards to a pet who's forgotten (or never met) them.

Five things to check this week:

🕯️ CANDLES - A wagging tail at coffee-table height is a lit wick waiting to happen. Never leave a burning candle in a room with an unsupervised pet - those flameless ones look real and fool nobody's tail.

🔥 FIREPLACES - That first fire of the season is fascinating to a dog. Keep pets back from the hearth, and get your chimney checked before the heavy-burn months. Sparks fly farther than you think.

⚡ SPACE HEATERS - The modern ones tip over and shut off. The old one in the garage doesn't. If yours doesn't have a tip-over switch, retire it. And never leave one running in a room with a pet (or a puppy who chews cords).
