Brooke USA

Brooke USA Empowering Equines. Empowering People. They can have a life worth living with our help.

Brooke USA works directly by funding partners to do whatever will most improve the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules through the alleviation of existing suffering and the development of equine welfare practices and facilities to prevent and reduce suffering in the future. Our vision is a world in which working horses, donkeys and mules are free from suffering, and better able to support

the people who depend on them in the world's poorest communities. Brooke USA delivers practical programs and provides support, advice, funding and infrastructure to its global network of employees, partners and supporters to make that vision a reality -- all funded by our generous donors.

Day two of Brooke USA's advocacy week in Washington, D.C. was filled with powerful conversations and meaningful opportunities to educate lawmakers about the devastating impact of the global donkey hide trade.

As part of Dorothy Brooke Month, we reflected on the determination of our founder, who believed that every working equine deserves compassion, protection, and dignity. Her example continues to inspire our work nearly 100 years later.

We met with the offices of Representatives Yvette Clarke, Morgan McGarvey, Rosa DeLauro, Chellie Pingree, Nikki Budzinski, Maria Elvira Salazar, Young Kim, Dave Min, and with the offices of Senators Tina Smith and Ruben Gallego.

Together with our coalition partners—the Animal Welfare Institute, American Association of Equine Practitioners, Species Unite, and the Virginia Partnership for Horses—we advocated for stronger protections against the slaughter of donkeys for their hides and highlighted the impact this trade has on vulnerable communities around the world.

The willingness of these offices to listen and engage reflects the same spirit of collaboration Dorothy Brooke embraced throughout her life's work. Real change happens when people come together around a shared commitment to compassion.

Please take action today at BrookeUSA.org/ejiao-act, especially if you see your representative listed above - the meeting is just the beginning- we need them to sign on to the Ejiao Act H.R. 5544.

Dorothy Brooke proved that one person's refusal to stay silent could change the future for working equines everywhere. This month, and every month, we honor her by doing the same.

In Dorothy Brooke’s time, access to veterinary care was almost nonexistent for working animals in poor communities.

Today, because of supporters like you, that is changing.
✔️ Mobile clinics
✔️ Trained animal health workers
✔️ Education for owners
✔️ Sustainable, long-term solutions

The mission hasn’t changed—but the reach has grown.

Carrying Dorothy's Voice to Capitol Hill🫏🇺🇸

As we celebrate Dorothy Brooke Month, Brooke USA brought Dorothy's legacy straight to the halls of Congress.

Nearly a century ago, Dorothy Brooke walked into the marketplaces of Cairo and refused to look away from the suffering of former war horses left behind. She didn't just advocate from a distance—she showed up, spoke up, and demanded change for animals who had no voice of their own.

Today, that same spirit guided our first day of advocacy meetings on Capitol Hill as we met with the offices of Senator Michael Bennet, Representative Emanuel Cleaver, and Representative LaMonica McIver to discuss the urgent need to end the donkey hide trade.

Donkeys around the world are being slaughtered at alarming rates to meet demand for ejiao, a gelatin made from donkey hides. The consequences are devastating for both donkey populations and the communities that depend on them for transportation, agriculture, and livelihoods.

Alongside our partners at the Animal Welfare Institute, American Association of Equine Practitioners, Species Unite, and the Virginia Partnership for Horses, we shared the realities of this crisis and advocated for stronger protections through federal legislation.

Dorothy Brooke proved that one person's refusal to stay silent could change the future for working equines everywhere. Today, we're honoring her legacy by showing up and speaking out.

You can join this fight, too. Visit BrookeUSA.org/ejiao-act to contact your legislators and help end the donkey hide trade.

Happy Birthday, Dorothy. We're still showing up.

Every June, we honor the extraordinary legacy of our founder, Dorothy Brooke — whose compassion for abandoned and suffering war horses in 1930s Egypt sparked a movement that continues to change lives today. What began with one woman’s determination to relieve suffering has reached hundreds of thousands of working horses, donkeys, and mules — and the people who depend on them for their livelihoods all over the world. 🧡

Now, more than 90 years later, Brooke USA has launched our latest program, the Native American Welfare Equine Initiative, bringing veterinary care, farrier training, education, and support directly to underserved communities right here in the United States.

One participant, Jon Whirlwind Horse and his daughter, Alyssa, attend veterinary and farrier classes together, using what they learn to care not only for their own horses, but also for others in their community. Their story is a beautiful reminder that when we support one horse, we strengthen entire communities.

“As a participant, I also know who in the community can help one another. The knowledge and tools left with us absolutely get shared and used. Our horses are family, so having support that helps ease their hurt means the world to us. Thanks to all y’all.” — Jon Whirlwind Horse

By joining our Guardian program and becoming a monthly donor, you’ll help continue Dorothy’s legacy of compassion for another 90 years. 🐴✨

A monthly donation of $25 provides a needy horse with a farriery treatment while training and educating horse owners on the importance of hoof health.

When you help an animal, you help a family.

Working horses, donkeys, and mules aren’t just animals—they are livelihoods. They carry water, transport goods, and make it possible for families to survive.

Care for the animal means stability for the household.

Compassion creates ripple effects far beyond what we can see. 🧡🫏

At just 19 years old, Khalid works deep inside the coal mines of Pakistan, making up to 16 trips a day with the help of four donkeys. Supporting his wife, mother, and six younger siblings, he depends on these animals for his family's survival.

A century ago, Dorothy Brooke recognized a simple truth: when working equines suffer, so do the people who depend on them. Today, that truth remains as relevant as ever.

But thousands more owners and animals still need help. Khalid is learning better ways to care for his donkeys—keeping their stables clean, ensuring they have water and rest, and understanding that these hardworking animals deserve compassion and care.

But there are thousands more owners and animals who still need help.

📅 Dorothy Brooke Giving Day is just ONE WEEK AWAY!

Your donation can provide life-changing education, veterinary care, and support for working horses, donkeys, and mules around the world. Together, we can continue Dorothy's legacy and help both animals and the families who rely on them every day.

❤️ One act of compassion can change countless lives. www.brookeusa.org/mydonation

Dorothy Brooke didn’t set out to build a legacy. She simply refused to ignore suffering—and chose to do something about it.

Nearly 100 years later, that choice still echoes around the world.
Every horse treated.
Every donkey cared for.
Every community supported.
It all traces back to one woman who believed things could be different.

🧡 And today, that work continues—because of you. Did you know that you can make a gift from your Donor Advised Fund?

🧡 More than ninety years after Dorothy Brooke began saving the working horses of Cairo, her compassion has had a ripple effect across generations and continents. This Animal Awareness Week, we’re honoring Alex from Nyakach, Kenya whose life was transformed by a donkey named TX.

At 45, Alex’s life had unraveled.

Unable to provide a living for his family – he started drinking. His marriage fell apart. He struggled to care for his children and elderly mother, and hope was slipping away.

Then, in 2025, everything began to change when Alex received a rehomed donkey through a program funded by Brooke USA.

He named the donkey TX — after the Toyota Land Cruiser — because TX was strong, reliable, and built for tough terrain. Alongside his mother’s donkey, Malkia (“angel” in Kiswahili), Alex began transporting water and sand to communities where motorbikes could not reach and carrying heavy loads by hand was exhausting.

For the first time in years, the work was steady and the income reliable.

At the same time, Alex had begun attending training sessions on donkey welfare and proper handling. Slowly, he realized that if he wanted a better life, he needed to change — for himself, his family, and the animals depending on him.

Alex stopped drinking. He rebuilt his life one step at a time — caring for his children and mother, working consistently, and treating his donkeys with kindness and respect.

Today, TX and Malkia are well-fed, protected, microchipped, insured, and cared for as true partners in Alex’s livelihood.

TX became more than just a means of transport. It became the vehicle of a man’s transformation.

This is the power of compassion for working animals — changing animal lives while restoring dignity, purpose, and hope for people, too.

Dorothy Brooke never saw herself as the hero of the story. In fact, she resisted the spotlight. She often reminded others that the work was only possible because of the people who stood beside her—the supporters, the caregivers, the community.

She believed in shared purpose. In collective impact. In lifting others up.

True leadership isn’t about recognition. It’s about results.

The work we are funding is built on this same structure. From staff to community groups, from teachers to veterinarians, we focus on the community. Learn more about our work at www.brookeusa.org/projects. Take action with animals in mind as we prepare to wrap up Animal Awareness Week. Make your impact: donate in honor of the working equines, write a letter to save donkeys from the ejiao trade, share our mission, and spread the word. You can be a leader, too. Leave your legacy today.

Dorothy Brooke knew rescue wasn’t enough. For every horse she helped, there were countless others still in need.

So she did something bold: She turned the war horse stables into a permanent hospital—a place where working animals belonging to the poorest communities could receive care, treatment, and relief.

Many doubted her.
They said no one would come.
They said it wouldn’t last.
But she believed in something bigger.
And she was right.

The beginning of what would become a legacy. Today, Brooke USA is continuing this legacy in multiple ways, and one way we are being bold is by stopping the import and sale of ejiao in the United States.

Help us help save donkeys from theft, brutality and slaughter--see how here: www.brookeusa.org/ejiao-act.
