Brooke USA

Brooke USA Empowering Equines. Empowering People. They can have a life worth living with our help.

Brooke USA works directly by funding partners to do whatever will most improve the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules through the alleviation of existing suffering and the development of equine welfare practices and facilities to prevent and reduce suffering in the future. Our vision is a world in which working horses, donkeys and mules are free from suffering, and better able to support

the people who depend on them in the world's poorest communities. Brooke USA delivers practical programs and provides support, advice, funding and infrastructure to its global network of employees, partners and supporters to make that vision a reality -- all funded by our generous donors.

Brooke USA is incredibly grateful for any donation received, but the great thing about gifts in wills is that they help us plan ahead for the future and help us protect vulnerable working horses, donkeys and mules for generations to come 🌎
Your donations ensure we can direct funds to the working horses, donkeys and mules that need them most, and focus on areas where we know working animals’ needs are greatest … just like Dorothy Brooke did years ago. Through her continued legacy we are making a lasting impact today✨
Please contact Emily Dulin, Brooke USA’s CEO, if you would like to discuss. You can make a special gift to Brooke USA in memory of Dorothy Brooke during June, her birthday month.

During Dorothy’s birthday month, we ask that supporters help us pay homage to Dorothy Brooke and her work by taking a photo, filming a video, hosting an event or sharing a fact.

From Emily Dulin, CEO of Brooke USA:

"Here’s my fact and why working at Brooke USA was destiny for me:

The first successful climb of Pico Bolívar, the highest peak in the Andes of Venezuela, was in 1935 and was accomplished by a small group of men of which my great uncle Heriberto Márquez Molina was one. A climb that takes at least a week today, was only made possible with the support of a mule, the noble steed who carried supplies and climbing gear for the expeditioners.

At 16,322 feet, Pico Bolivar is a similar height to Mount Whitney in California which at 14,505 feet is the highest peak in the contiguous United States.

During Dorothy Brooke’s month, I honor the incredible support horses, donkeys and mules have been to civilization and to my own family's heritage – only made possible by one amazing and brave mule

Brooke USA Treasurer Holly Sampson with Pocket, her chestnut dressage horse. Pocket inspired Holly to get involved with Brooke USA and through her work help working equines … just like Old Bill, the first horse Dorothy encountered in Egypt.

Old Bill, also a chestnut, had a clear army brand on his near quarter. He had served in Palestine, but when Dorothy found him, he was in a terrible state, with “lifeless eyes and a gaunt frame supported by four shapeless swollen legs that trembled under his weight.”

This was the moment when Dorothy felt a strong urge to seek out old horses and end their suffering.

On June 10, 2025, the Togolese government signed an interministerial decree regulating the slaughter and export of donkeys and their products. This is a major achievement for Brooke USA’s sister organization, Brooke West Africa. This is truly great news and motivates us all to do our part in the US as we prepare to introduce the Ejiao Act in Washington, DC, prohibiting the sale and importation of ejiao, the gelatin made from boiling donkey hides and used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Thank you, Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), for sponsoring our upcoming bill. Let's all continue to work together to preserve the donkey species.

It was a hot Florida afternoon, but the celebration was worth it as we honored the birthday of our visionary founder, Dorothy Brooke! 🎉

Here’s to compassion, courage, and carrying the mission forward — one candle and one cause at a time. 🐎🎂
