*NOT MY BABY*
Thoughts & prayers could be used tonight. This sweet chick was pipped, already trying to free themsleves at 9am. Due to such a delay, and circumstances (first time parents). The judgement to intervene after very little progress on baby's part, was just made. Time to check for the need to assist.
You take a lot of risks when you open a nestbox. Especially with a newly pipped-hatched chick from the increased spike in hormones. They could abandon the nest. They could attack their chicks/eggs. They could very well go after and kill their mate in such cases as these (Indian Ringnecks). We however made the right call in this situation. There is no way that baby would've made it out on their own.
The membranes surrounding them had dried. Solidifying their position inside the shell, making zipping impossible. They would have surely died in the shell (DIS) without help. Some quick acknowledged assistance can mean the difference between life and death. Thankfully mum & dad didn't seem to mind any sort of intervention. That my partner also knew exactly what to do/look for. As to not potientally harm the baby at all. *assisting can often be the cause of death - never do so without proper knowledge. It WILL end in heartbreak!*. Fingers crossed everything continues positively and they are a happy healthy perky chick come morning!
Unfortunately this is just one of the MANY things that can go wrong when raising birds. The hours spent awake waiting on eggs to hatch. The anxiety of when to make that call. The worry of if you need to pull them early to keep them safe. The fear of their life on the line if you dont... the horror of sleepless nights ahead of you if you do... It truly really never ends.
Repeating myself again for those in the back!!! "Domestic" parrots do NOT naturally make very good parents. Don't ever breed your birds unless your fully aware and ready to handle anything that may come. YOU are responsible for every life created under your roof... NOT your birds. Never blame them when things go wrong. Nature is a bitch, and your playing god.
