Pediatric Airway Health: Why It Matters More Than You Think
A child’s airway is the foundation for proper growth, sleep, behavior, learning, and long-term health. When airway development is compromised, the effects reach far beyond crooked teeth.
Here’s what parents should know:
🫁 Small or Restricted Airways Can Lead To:
* Chronic mouth breathing
* Snoring or restless sleep
* Daytime fatigue or hyperactivity
* Poor focus or behavioral challenges
* Narrow jaws and crowded teeth
* Increased risk for sleep-disordered breathing and pediatric sleep apnea
👅 Why This Happens
The tongue is a primary driver of facial and airway development. When the tongue cannot rest properly on the palate (due to tongue-ties, mouth breathing, or poor oral posture), the upper jaw and airway may not grow to their full genetic potential.
🧠 Early Signs to Watch For
* Open-mouth posture
* Dark circles under the eyes
* Bedwetting beyond typical age
* Grinding teeth
* Frequent allergies or congestion
⏰ Early Evaluation = Better Outcomes
Evaluating airway health early allows us to guide growth, improve breathing, and reduce the likelihood of more invasive treatment later in life.
At our office, we take an airway-first approach—focusing on proper growth, function, and breathing first… then aligning teeth for a beautiful smile.
