Lewisburg WV locals, anyone willing to foster this girl to help her get her spark back? That’s an awfully long time to be in a shelter. Or perhaps when the weather clears a bit someone could take her for a Doggy Day Out and get some good photos that showcase her personality outside of the shelter environment? A few hours of your volunteer time could change her life forever 🐾

Adopting a pet? Congrats! You've just picked someone up in your car who isn't great at communicating, just got out of a tough situation, and isn't sure if they trust you yet. Sound familiar? That's because the first three days with a new pet are basically a 72-hour first date.

It's exciting, it's awkward, and it's definitely not the time to start planning your holiday cards or giving them a bubble bath.

No judgment, but some of y'all might need a quick refresher on first-date etiquette. So here's your official guide to early red flags (from you, not them).

🚩 Leaving them unattended like it's no big deal
Imagine showing up to a blind date and immediately getting ditched at a party where you know no one. That's how your pet feels when they're left alone right away.

Bottom line: Don't ghost your new pet. It's day one. Stick close.

🚩 Being too handsy
They're cute. You're smitten. But this isn't the moment for kisses, cuddles, or TikToks with voiceovers. You just met. They don't know your intentions yet.

This isn't a fling; it's the start of something real. Let them come to you. (Consent matters, even in pet parenting.)

🚩 Introducing them to your entire cast of characters
You ever meet someone and they immediately want you to meet their mom? Yikes.

Your pet doesn't need to meet your whole social circle (or animal crew) right away. Let them settle in, one face at a time. Save the group hangs for later.

🚩 Giving them a bath
You wouldn't give someone you just met a bath, and if you would… we don't want to talk about this anymore.

Yes, shelter pets can be a little stinky. But baths are a lot. They're wet, stressful, and weirdly intimate for a pet who doesn't even know your hobbies yet. Spritz some pet-safe essential oils around the house and give them time to decompress before sudsing them up.

🚩 Taking them on a spontaneous adventure
You are not on The Bachelor. No one wants a surprise helicopter ride on day one.

Keep things calm and close to home. No breweries, dog parks, or road trips. Your pet's just trying to figure out which room has the snacks, don't make them learn a whole new location yet.

🚩 Expecting instant love
Some folks swipe right, go on one date, and expect sparks to fly immediately. The same energy applies to new pet parents who expect instant attachment.

Sometimes it does happen, but more often, it's a slow burn. They might hide under the bed, bark at the fridge, or side-eye you for three days straight. It doesn't mean it's not working. It just means you're still getting to know each other.

💘 The Bottom Line: Love doesn't always strike like lightning. Sometimes, it starts with awkward silences, side-eyes, and mutually agreeing that you won't make any sudden moves. But give it time, stay patient, and keep showing up, and you just might find yourself in the best relationship of your life.

Update!

Sophie got adopted! Huge thank you to every single person who took a second out of your day to hit that share button! It truly takes a village. 🫶🏼🐾

🎉 update- ADOPTED! 🎉

Today is Sophie’s gotcha day — and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share that this sweet soul is finally headed HOME! 🐾💕🏡

From trembling in the back of her kennel to shining on hikes and river walks, Sophie showed us that all she needed was a chance… and someone to see her for who she truly is outside of the shelter walls. ✨

Thanks to The Rustic Mutt Foundation, who not only shared her story but also sponsored her adoption, Sophie caught the eye of her perfect match — a loving family ready to give her the peace, patience, and soft couch she’s longed for since March.

Today, Sophie leaves the chaos behind and begins the next chapter of her life — filled with safety, snuggles, and the quiet joy she deserves. 💜

Let this be a reminder: there are SO many animals like Sophie waiting for someone to see them. Sometimes, it just takes a little help and a whole lot of heart! A HUGE thank you to The Rustic Mutt Foundation!

UPDATE: ADOPTED! 🎉

Meet Sophie — a 65(ish)lb hound mix with the gentlest soul you’ll ever meet. She’s been at the Greenbrier Humane Society since March, and while the staff and volunteers do everything they can to show her love, the shelter environment is taking its toll on her. The constant noise, barking, and chaos terrify her. She has a hard time getting noticed because she hides in the back of her kennel shaking like a leaf.

But outside of those walls? Sophie shines. ✨
We’ve taken her on two Doggy Day Out adventures, and she was a dream. The first time, we strolled 4 miles down the Greenbrier River Trail before splashing in the river — she loves the water. The second time, she joined another pup for a 4.5 mile hike through the Greenbrier State Forest. She walked beautifully on leash, politely met other hikers (by keeping her distance & staying at my side), and enjoyed every scent and splash along the way.

She rides perfectly in the car (hops right in without hesitation) and has never barked or whined while she’s been in our presence. She just wants to be close, to feel safe, and to quietly soak in the world around her.

💉 Sophie’s adoption fee includes her spay and current vaccines.
🐾 The Rustic Mutt Foundation will cover the cost of her microchip for any approved adopter.
🚚 If a rescue is interested in pulling Sophie, we will cover her pull fee, health certificate fee, and assist with transport.

This girl deserves so much more than a kennel. She deserves a couch. A person. A soft voice telling her she’s safe.

You know the drill, share this post & let’s find Sophie a home and the peace she so desperately needs. 💕
