When I was a kid, I only drew pictures of horses and trees. I cut all the tiny, black and white horse pictures out of the Tattersalls catalog and taped them to my bedroom walls. I would get up early, before anyone else in the house, and ride. I spent weekend nights in the summer sleeping in haylofts with my horse friends. I would drag my saddle in the house to sit in the floor and clean every nook and cranny.
Maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised, that after retirement, at age 70, I own a boarding barn. I shouldn’t shake my head and wonder how I traded high heels and a business suit for warm bibs, sturdy boots and a good hat that fits. I shouldn’t begrudge getting up at 5:30 in the freezing cold and wind to make sure all the horses in my care are safe, well-fed, and happy. Perhaps, after a 40 year career, I’ve just come back to my first love and the good parts of my childhood, because just this morning, I thought there is no better sound than a barn full of content horses. It’s a different kind of peace; but peace, nonetheless.

Kiss a horse today. ♥️

My $3k horses stand right alongside my $40k horses.
I’ve had a $500 horse go on to earn $100k.
I’ve watched a $35k horse become a $5k horse with one X-ray.
I owned a mare who earned $107k — and she was purchased for just $700.

Horses don’t know their price tag, and they don’t know what they’ve won.
But they absolutely know how you treat them.

There isn’t a single horse on my place that’s treated any differently than the others.
You can’t put a price on a soul.

Today, as I walked through my pastures,
I petted the noses of horses whose owners failed them.
I petted the noses of horses who could have been winners, had they ever been given the chance.
And I also get to pet the winners.

Today, I kissed the noses of colts who could become winners one day —
if their people help them reach their full potential.

Horses don’t understand dollar value.
But they know if you love them, and if you believe in them.
Feed them well — and they’ll feed your soul right back.
