This is from one of my heroes.

"Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act." ― Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Please do your research! Dogs need jobs, especially working dogs.

This is Hazel. Hazel is one of the RESCUED Great Pyrenees currently working on our farm. Hazel is one of THOUSANDS of Great Pyrenees across the United States who found herself without a home because of unprepared owners. THOUSANDS.

Those of us doing rescue are INUNDATED with requests to take in these amazing dogs from all sorts of situations: shelters, homesteaders, apartment dwellers, suburban families, farmers in the country… in general people who were grossly unprepared for what it really takes to have these working dogs in their lives.

So here’s some REAL TALK:

🐾 Pyrs are WORKING DOGS governed by 1000s of years of selective breeding for specific traits

🐾 Pyrs are NOT white Golden Retrievers that make outstanding family pets and love everyone they meet.

🐾 A well bred, true to breed Pyr is protective of their family, flocks, and herds. They are NOT personal protection dogs, though.

🐾 Pyrs are INCREDIBLY INDEPENDENT - bred to guard their family/flocks/herds without directions/commands …they don’t really care what you want them to do.

🐾 ALL livestock guardian dog breeds prefer to enlarge their territory and REQUIRE EXCELLENT FENCING

🐾 Pyrs (and all other LGD) bark. A lot. Especially as adolescents while they are learning the job.

🐾 Pyrs take about 2+ YEARS to reach maturity. Adolescence is long and sometimes very tedious.

🐾 Pyrs are NOT AN EASY FIX if predators are taking chickens off your homestead.

We can’t keep up with the number of Pyrs currently being discarded like trash because people acquire them and are unprepared and uncommitted for the long haul.

Educate yourself. Stop romanticizing these dogs. Stop supporting backyard breeders.

Rescue. Is. Overwhelmed.

EDITED TO ADD…

We can’t believe this post has been shared as many times as it has. Clearly, there are some hot button issues for a few folks and we would invite them to bring back here and have a discussion about it with us. We stand by our post.

Hazel is one of six 24/7 working livestock guardian dogs on our farm; 3 of whom are Pyrs.

We have seen many more come through our farm, and we work closely with a variety of rescues because we are specifically and uniquely equipped to deal with livestock guardian dogs. We know these dogs; we know these breeds.

And again, if you’d like to come to the table and argue or discuss what we’ve said or criticize us, then please do it here instead of sharing the post into private groups and then blocking our access.

LET’S TALK TOOLS

Red Arrow: Harness that fits around the dog’s body and when connected to a clip leash, creates a pulling reaction from the dog. This pulling reaction triggers the shoulders and chest muscles to be used which then influences the dog to use strength to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk right next to you on a harness, you will not experience the pulling. Congratulations, I have yet to see this. 😂

Orange Arrow: Flat collar, usually used to connect a clip leash to and often times sits on the bottom of the neck due to gravity and the dog’s head being higher than the shoulders. This then triggers the dog’s shoulder muscles and the pulling starts. Again, this teaches the dog that strength needs to be used to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a flat collar, you will not experience the pulling. The majority of dogs I see are pulling during this setup.

Blue Arrow: Slip Leash is very high on the neck where it is placed behind the ears, behind the jaw bone, and it allows us to influence the dog’s head and brain. Shoulders and chest muscles are not triggered and physical strength is not used during the walk. When used correctly, little to no pressure is on the leash and physical strength is used by the dog to get from point A to point B. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a slip leash, you will not experience any pulling.

Out of the 3 tools shown, the slip leash is one of the most productive tools to create a structured walk, a calm mind, and a solid relationship.

Ever watch anyone walk a horse by the saddle?

Yeah, me either.

That’s because when you walk a 1000lb animal, you need to influence the brain and not the body.

Let’s start influencing our dog’s mentally and not physically.
