This is Cocoa Bean!

Breed of the week: Doberman Pinscher

In the late 1800s, a German tax collector named Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann wanted a dog that could protect him while he traveled dangerous roads collecting money. He needed a dog with intelligence, courage, loyalty, speed, and strength all in one.

To create this ideal protector, Dobermann carefully bred several powerful and intelligent breeds believed to include the Rottweiler, German Pinscher, Black & Tan Terrier, Weimaraner, and possibly Greyhound influences for speed and elegance. The result was a sleek, athletic dog with unmatched loyalty and sharp instincts.

Over the years, Dobermans proved they were much more than guard dogs. They became military dogs, police K9s, search-and-rescue partners, and deeply devoted family companions. Their intelligence consistently ranks among the highest of all dog breeds, and their ability to bond closely with humans is legendary.

One of the most famous Dobermans in history was Kurt, a war dog who served with U.S. Marines during World War II on the island of Guam. Dobermans were nicknamed “Devil Dogs” by the Marines because of their bravery and fearlessness in combat. Kurt became a hero after alerting soldiers to approaching enemy forces, giving them precious seconds to prepare for attack. Tragically, he was the first canine casualty on Guam, but his actions helped save countless lives.

Today, a memorial honoring these courageous Dobermans stands on Guam, reminding the world of the breed’s loyalty and sacrifice.

We had another great pack walk this past Saturday! They are always a lot of fun and super productive! We had perfect weather and got to do some challenging drills! From switching directions, to walking super slow, to keeping your dog in a down while one heeled around the others, everyone did so good. Thank you to everyone that came out to put in the work!

Here are some of our recent graduates!!!

They all did so good! Training doesn't end at graduation! It is important to keep training and incorporate their commands into your daily routine. If you don't use it, you loose it! Having a well-mannered dog means committing to being the pack leader for them!

This is Bella, she is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi!

Breed of the week: Corgis trace their roots back to Wales, where they were bred as highly efficient herding dogs. There are two main types: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. While they look similar, they actually come from different breeding lines!

Cardigans are the older of the two, believed to have been brought to Wales over 3,000 years ago by Celtic tribes. Pembrokes came later, possibly with Flemish weavers in the 10th century. Despite their differences, both types were bred with a very specific job in mind: driving cattle across open farmland.

Their working purpose shaped everything about them. Corgis are what’s known as “heelers,” meaning they herd by nipping at the heels of livestock to keep them moving. Their low-to-the-ground build isn’t just cute, it is practical! Staying close to the ground helped them avoid kicks from cattle, making them surprisingly tough and agile for their size. They were also bred for endurance, capable of working long days in rough terrain and unpredictable weather.

Beyond cattle herding, corgis were versatile farm dogs. They helped move sheep, guarded property, and even acted as early warning systems with their sharp bark. Their intelligence and independence were essential, as farmers relied on them to make quick decisions while managing large animals.

Over time, selective breeding emphasized not just their working ability, but also their loyal and friendly temperament. Their adorable looks helped too, eventually earning them royal favor, most famously as companions to Queen Elizabeth II.
