Hartley's Hounds Dog Training

Hartley's Hounds Dog Training provides obedience, behavior and puppy training, as well as virtual coaching consultations.

We offer free evaluations to help you learn more about how we can help you and your dog. Micronesian Muttz Dog Training started in 2013 by Jon and Ruthie Hartley. Jon earned a BA in Sales and Marketing from the University of Providence in 2003. He began dog training professionally for Sit Means Sit-Houston in 2011. His wife, Ruthie graduated from the University of Houston with a BA in Education in

2007. She began her dog training profession as a volunteer for Sit Means Sit-Houston in 2012. Micronesian Muttz is a member of The International Association of Canine Professionals, AKC CGC Evaluators, Pet First Aid & CPR Certified and holds a Guam business license. They continue their dog training education by attending dog training workshops in the U.S. mainland, participate in dog training and behavior webinars, actively partake in private forums for professional dog trainers, and take time to read and discuss dog psychology and training literature. Jon and Ruthie live in Guam with their three year old daughter and four dogs, Halyn, Texas, Brodi and Aiya.

It's been two weeks since our beautiful girl, Halyn, passed away. She was an amazingly smart, sweet, and motivated dog. She loved to fetch, play tug, LOVED the beach, enjoyed helping with lessons, loved massages, and was a wonderful big sister to our daughter. Halyn was not an easy dog when she was given to us at 6 months, but Jon (my husband) did an incredible job earning her trust and working with her. From that trust, a strong and beautiful relationship was born. Her intelligence and demeanor was noticed everywhere we went, here in NC and back on the island of Guam. Everyone loved her! With her skills and motherly love, she helped train and rehabilitate many dogs during our 9 years on the island. We were always so proud to say we were a pack! We miss her dearly, but we know she is running free! She was 13 years old. We love you, Halyn! 🤍🐾🌈

We've been going for walks early in the morning since it's getting hotter every day. The dogs definitely appreciate the nicer weather. They're getting older, so we've been going on shorter walks. Took advantage of today's overcast weather and had a mid-day walk. 🐾💙🐾

Meet Ruby! I've been working with her and her owners for the last two months. We're working on puppy behaviors, learning manners, proper environment exposure and covering proper leash communication. Ruby and I had a great time last week during her Day Train. She's rocking it! 🤙🏼💛🐾 Proud of Ruby and her owners!

Meet Mac, 4 year old lab mix. We had our third lesson last week and training is coming along well.

Here's what we're working on:

- walking nicely on a leash 🙌
- owners are learning how to implement temporary management protocols to control aroused behaviors in the house
- learning door manners
- place command was introduced to teach boundaries

We're looking forward to seeing him again! 🐾🙌🐾

Meet Oreo! I've been working with him and his owner to help with some reactivity towards a family member if they attempt to enter their bedroom, leash reactivity on walks, confidence building, and general obedience.

We had our third lesson earlier this week and I'm happy to see so much improvement. His owner guides him with so much more confidence and intention. Oreo has improved with his behaviors at home (especially with the family member) and is learning how to walk nicely for his owner.

There are still some areas to work on, but I'm proud of the improvement in both Oreo and his owner.

I love how his owner acknowledges the importance of working on herself first in order to be a better dog owner. Something that even professional dog owners practice.

Nice job, Oreo and Mom! 💙🐾

If your dog is struggling staying calm during walks, make sure you're setting up opportunities (outside of walks) for them to practice calm behaviors.

Say hello to this cute 14 week old boy, Beorn. We had our second lesson yesterday.

Here's what we covered:

🌟 The importance of building resilience through confidence- building exercises and safe environmental exposures.

🌟 Recommendations on how to add structure and management in the house to help Beorn understand that there are rules and expectations, even as a puppy.

🌟 Introduction to the Place Command - Beorn is a smart and a motivated puppy. We want to introduce a way/place (along with the crate) to settle and decompress.

Meet Marrone! We had his initial training session last week. Here's what we covered and what we'll be working on:

🐕Build clear leash communication to help with nice walks

🐕Impulse control (he likes to jump and pees from excitement)

🐕 Confidence-building and proper socialization to prevent leash reactivity from escalating
