You walked into the yard and nearly stepped on me. So I spread my neck flat like a cobra, hissed louder than a snake my size should manage, and lunged at your leg — with my mouth clamped shut the whole time. You saw a killer and reached for a shovel.

I'm an eastern hognose. I've lived in the loose dirt behind your shed for four years, and every bit of that was an act. I'm two feet long and you're the size of a house. Bluffing is all I've got.

Push me further and I escalate to the worst death scene in nature: flop onto my back, tongue out, fake a rotten smell, even leak a drop of blood. Flip me upright and I stubbornly roll back over.

The truth? I hunt toads. My upturned snout is a shovel, and my venom means nothing to you.

Step back and I'm gone. I've been protecting your garden all along.

A little milkies outside. Today was there first day back outside. Only in the barnyard bc these guys are quick!

We hadn’t seen Fern in a couple days and she hadnt been coming down to the barn and complaining to us about the heat or lack of snacks

I thought maybe she had her babies and had found a nice little Hidey hole for all of them. My husband went out this am on the golf cart to look around for her and was met by this sight

Of course she nested in a middle of a jagger thicket that was about a knee high so her babies had a nice place to hide.

She was not happy we scooped up her babies and she didn’t want to leave her nest even though her babies werent there any longer. I had to walk in front of her with a squealing baby while my husband walked behind her keeping her from turning back. Once we got close enough she ran right to the pond. She probably hasn’t had water in a day or two bc she couldn’t leave her babies alone.

Now she is snug in the barn with a big bowl of water and nice bowl of feed and a big hay pile to make a soft nest for her little ones.

Peanut made his debut today and did wonderfully. Bottle babies always love attention even if he does have a new mama to get milkies from.

Welcome Peanut (nutty buddy) to the zoo crew.
Adopted mama Daisy took him with no problem. Although her other baby Sage is having a hard time being away from his mama. It’s time to shove over Sage boy theres a new kid in town
