💡Tuesday Tip from RSG 🐑🐐
Heat Stress in Females & Pregnancy Rates

Some of you may be receiving pregnancy test results that are poorer than expected this year. Here is what the data is showing!

The one major factor that correlates? The extremely high temperatures, along with high Humidity, that hit many regions in late June through early July. While Texas and other southern geographies actually saw better results thanks to cooler-than-normal temps and lower humidity, flocks exposed to heat stress during breeding cycles have been more challenged.

For females, high temperatures can:
• 🌡️ Disrupted heat cycles – reducing expression and timing of estrus.
• 🧬Increased follicular temperature – 7 days pre & 7 days post LAI reduced oocyte quality & fertilization.
• 🌡️ Reduce implantation rates – heat stress reduced the embryos ability to attach to the uterus.
• 🌡️ Increase early embryo loss – especially within the first weeks post-breeding.

👉 Management Tip: Animals can tolerate high temperatures if they are able to have recovery time at night 🌙. Recovery time was what many lacked this season. More specifically, at night, animals recover if ambient temperatures can reach the mid 70s F with low to moderate humidity for at least 3 hours.

☀Although we can’t control the weather, we can do as much as possible to keep animals cool and on a solid nutrition program during extreme heat. These steps help reduce stress and support better reproductive outcomes.

The single most important management tip is clean, fresh, and cool, if possible, water. Keeping animals in straw bedding, air moving across them, insulated roofs (if possible) will reduce body surface temperature to mention a few. Planning fleece length in sheep of approximately ¾ of an inch during the hottest time of the year increased heat dissipation. Nutritionally we recommend and use several technologies in our nutrition products for increased blood flow, vasodilation, and relaxation.
