A Shout-Out to a Thoughtful Dog Owner
Today I want to give a shout-out to a woman I saw walking her dog at the park.
I could tell her dog was feeling a little nervous, and she was doing a great job managing the situation by keeping some distance from Shiloh and Boaz. At the time, I was busy cleaning up after my dogs. I told Boaz to wait and give me a minute, and when I noticed them approaching, I used my usual cue: “They don’t want to talk to you.”
After disposing of the p**p, we took a wide arc toward the middle of the field and gave them plenty of space. As the woman and her dog passed by, I heard her tell her dog, “It’s okay, they won’t talk to you,” while delivering a treat. She continued rewarding her dog as they walked away.
I kept Boaz and Shiloh at a distance and waited before heading in the same direction so we wouldn’t startle them.
I don’t know whether this woman was actively working on training skills like many of my clients do, but I appreciated how thoughtfully she handled her dog. It was a great example of advocating for your dog and setting them up for success.
So if you see someone working with their dog, or if you are that person, don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for what your dog needs. Saying things like:
* “My dog needs some space.”
* “Can you give us a minute?”
* “We’re training right now.”
* “Please don’t approach.”
can make a huge difference.
Most dog owners want to be respectful and helpful. Clear communication helps everyone involved—people and dogs alike—have a safer and more positive experience.
Thank you to all the owners who advocate for their dogs. Those small moments of awareness and kindness can have a big impact on a dog’s confidence and progress. 🐾❤️
