The holidays can be a busy time for all of us. And the last thing we want is to worry about a pet emergency during this time. Below are some tips for keeping your pet happy and healthy during the holidays.
1. Pet proof your Christmas tree.
Make sure you anchor the tree securely and check your tree stand daily to confirm that the bolts are still locking the tree in place. Some pet owners may elect to put plastic fencing around their tree as a pet safety barrier.
2. Block any loose chords or wires from pet reach.
Pets like to chew on things and Christmas lights can cause danger of electrocution if your pet chews on them.
3. Keep ornaments up and out of reach of your pets.
Chewing on ornaments can cause cuts in the mouth, throat, and digestive system, as well as other serious injuries. Tree-trimmings like garland and tinsel, when eaten, can also result in gastrointestinal blockages that have the potential to harm or even kill your pet.
4. Be aware of poisonous Holiday plants. Hollies, mistletoe, and Poinsettias can be toxic to pets.
5. Keep gifts and candy out of reach. Most of us know chocolate is harmful to pets, but did you also know raisins, grapes, and any sweet treats containing xylitol could be potentially life threatening to your pet? If your pets have ingested anything that they shouldn't eat, you can contact the pet poison control hotline at (888) 426-4435.
