Happy hunting guys! So we’re three days into season and I’ve already gotten calls on pricing, and mounting velvet deer. I wanna make a post just to give you all some tips. First things first, as far as velvet is concerned. Please take extra precaution when handling the antlers. Velvet is just skin on the antlers so you can very easily distort it with your hands and rub it off. I like to use the product called velvalok. I’ve tried a few different things in the industry and I think it is by far the best. It’s almost $40 for a bottle of it at Scheels. Before you bring a deer to me, you are more than welcome to treat your own antlers, but if you don’t just know that I will and I will charge you $50 for that on top of the normal mounting price. Secondly, early season deer have very thin skin and very short hair. it is normal for them to look almost bald in the armpits. The heat this time of year will cause hair to slip. My advice is this….
If at all possible, get your deer skinned as quickly as you can wherever it’s cool and out of the sun. For example, the buck I killed on opening morning, died down in a very shady cool area so I went ahead and skinned him right there. Secondly, get the hide frozen as quickly as possible. I would rather thaw it out when it’s colder and get it fleshed than do it in the heat.
Third, My prices have went up this year. Tanning has gone up and shipping has gone up. I have to increase my prices. I am $700 for a standard deer mount, and pedestals cost more. Be prepared for that cost increase. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any other questions I’m happy to help regardless of what you’re doing with your trophy. Good luck!
Here’s a picture of a completed mount where the velvet was really well taken care of!
