Excellent information from the team over at Le Mars Veterinary Clinic. We always work closely with them when there is something like this in the area. Please be aware if your dog has any new sneezing or coughing and refrain from bringing them in. Feel free to give us a call if you need to reschedule or change any upcoming appointments you may have with us.

ATTENTION: In the last two weeks we have seen a significant increase in upper respiratory infection cases in dogs. With the Plymouth County Fair (and others) fast approaching we wanted to let everyone know what to look for. Upper respiratory infections in dogs are often referred to as "kennel cough". However, we try to avoid using this term as it implies that they only get it from kennels. This is far from accurate as they can pick them up at dog parks, fair grounds, feed stores and yes, even at vet clinics. It also implies they only get a cough with these infections. Which again, is not the case. Many dogs only present with sneezing or a fever with lethargy. It is important to know that after symptoms develop, dogs can be contagious for 10-14 days, even if symptoms have resolved. If your dog has these symptoms, has had these symptoms or if they have been exposed to a dog with these symptoms recently, we would encourage you to keep them home and away from other dogs.

It is also important to remember that just because your dog is up to date on vaccines does not mean they can't get an upper respiratory infection. There are many different causes and we can only vaccinate for what we have vaccines for.
