We’re a full-service veterinary clinic dedicated to providing exceptional care for pets and peace of mind for their families. At Oak Ridge Animal Center, we are proud to have three experienced and compassionate veterinarians dedicated to providing exceptional care for every patient who walks through our doors. Dr. Shana Freeman, a 2016 graduate of Oklahoma State University, began her career here shortly after graduation and is now the proud owner of Oak Ridge Animal Center. Dr. Marshall Sevcik graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2019 and has been a valued part of our team since 2022. Dr. Jon Henderson, who earned his DVM from OSU in 1999, recently joined our team and brings decades of experience to our hospital. Every one of our veterinarians is committed to the health, comfort, and well-being of your pets—whether it’s a routine exam, vaccinations, or an unexpected emergency in the middle of the night. Blanketing season is back and so is the question every horse owner debates every October: to blanket or not to blanket? 🐴

Here's what the research actually says. Horses that are blanketed regularly may not develop as thick a natural winter coat because the added warmth signals the body that insulation is less necessary. That means a blanketed horse becomes more dependent on the blanket as winter progresses, not less.

This isn't an argument against blanketing. Clipped horses, senior horses, underweight horses, and horses in wet climates often genuinely need it. But it is an argument for being consistent once you start.

The bigger nutritional connection: horses that are cold burn significantly more calories just to maintain body temperature. Whether you blanket or not, make sure your feed program accounts for the increased energy demand that comes with colder weather. 🙌

October checklist for horse owners heading into cold weather. 👇

✅ Body condition score every horse now, while there's still time to adjust before winter
✅ Check your hay supply and quality, not just quantity. Hay cut late in the season can be lower in digestible energy than you'd expect
✅ Senior horses and hard keepers need extra attention right now. They lose condition faster in cold and regain it slower

The transition from fall to winter is one of the most important nutrition windows of the year. 🐴
