Continuing on with our pet parasite education, today's topic is hookworms.

Hookworms are tiny parasites that live in the intestines of dogs and cats. Pets can get them by walking on or ingesting contaminated soil, and they can even spread to people through skin contact.

Signs include diarrhea, weight loss, or anemia, but sometimes there are no symptoms at all. Diagnosis is done through a f***l test, and treatment with dewormers is effective, but follow-up is needed since larvae can return. Prevent hookworms with regular parasite control and by picking up pet waste promptly!

We've seen lots of pets with positive f***l tests recently, so over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing some parasite info to help you determine if your pet may be affected.

Today, we're starting off with Giardia. Giardia is a parasite that most commonly affects dogs, but is also seen in cats as well as humans. Pets get it from drinking contaminated water or contact with infected stool on a surface, like grass or a stick. Symptoms include things like diarrhea, belly pain, vomiting, weight loss, and poor appetite. Diagnosis is made by stool testing, and treatment involves oral prescription medication. If your pet has ongoing diarrhea, contact us about checking a f***l sample!

Completely unrelated to veterinary medicine, but important nonetheless:

IT'S FAT BEAR WEEK!

Vote for the fattest bear of the year! Some of the largest brown bears on Earth make their home at Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Brown bears get fat to survive, and Fat Bear Week is an annual tournament celebrating their success in preparation for winter hibernation.

(I'm voting for 602 to win it all because he has happy feet, but check out their bios and pick your favorite!)

Meet Bear! He had his first visit with Dr Hall last week for vaccinations and a new puppy health check. Reports indicate he was an excellent patient.

(Don’t worry, this Bear won’t bite, unless you’re made of peanut butter or squeak when touched.)

As part of Happy Healthy Cat Month, here are some healthy treat options for cats!

-Cooked, unseasoned meats like chicken, turkey, or salmon (fully cooked, no bones, no seasoning).

-Freeze-dried meat treats that are high in protein, no fillers.

-Catnip or cat grass for a fun, safe indulgence.

-Vet-approved commercial cat treats made without artificial colors, flavors, or excessive carbohydrates.

Tips for Treat Time:

-Treats should make up no more than 10% of your cat’s daily calories.

-Always introduce new treats slowly to avoid tummy upset.

-Avoid human foods like onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, raisins, and anything seasoned.

Remember, treats are for occasional rewards, not meal replacements. A balanced diet, fresh water, and lots of play are the true keys to your cat’s health!
