X-RAY FRIDAY ANSWER: these dogs all presented to Mass Vet for swallowing toy balls, which was a very common foreign body in 2022! 🎾

Dog owners may not think of their dog's own toys as being dangerous, but as we always say: dogs eat the darndest things! Whether it's a ball that's too small for them or getting carried away with playing, a dog that swallows a ball (and typically they swallow them whole) is at risk for an obstruction. Sometimes, we can induce vomiting and the ball will come up. But other times, we must remove the ball endoscopically or surgically. Luckily for these 3 pups, we were able to extract the balls and get them home.

As you can see, we’ve had some pretty great patients this year! Our Ethos team members and all in the veterinary community have been dedicated to keeping pets happy and healthy all year long. Cheers to 2023 and another year of being there for pets who need us. 💚

We're wishing all those who celebrate a wonderful, Merry Christmas. We'd also like to remember & thank those working over this holiday week. The animals in our ICUs still need us on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, and we couldn't do it without you. Thank you, as always, to our teams and other essential personnel for being here. 💚

And remember: your cat probably prefers the box over the toys that came in it. 🤣

X-RAY FRIDAY ANSWER: this Chocolate Lab ingested a couple of nails!
Fallen nails on the floor are a hazard for dogs all year round, but especially around the holidays. Objects like nails and thumbtacks can fall out of wall decorations or go missing in the decorating (or un-decorating) process. Opt for adhesive hooks as a safer alternative!

Luckily for this Lab, the Port City team was able to remove the nails via gastrotomy (a surgical procedure in which the stomach is opened up.) He recovered well and was discharged the next day from the hospital bright and alert!

How to Gift a Pet Responsibly - Ethos Veterinary Health

Pets as gifts: we've all seen videos of an unsuspecting person who opens up a box and surprise! A puppy! 🎁🐶 Although it's adorable, it's not advisable. But there are ways to responsibly give a pet as a gift to ensure that it is beneficial for both recipient and pet.

If you are thinking of gifting a pet for the holidays, or any other time of year, be sure to read through these tips on how to do it responsibly before you begin the process.

“The ASPCA recommends the giving of pets as gifts only to people who have expressed a sustained interest in owning one, and the ability to care for it responsibly.” – ASPCA Official Website We all love our pets, so it is no surprise that many people enjoy seeing the look of excitement on a fam...

During this merry time of year, we want to take a moment to remind our very busy veterinary teams (and all who need to hear it) to take care of themselves. From Veterinary Social Worker, Christina:
🌟 Listen to what your mind, body, and soul require this season. Need to rest? Need to refuel? Need to indulge?
🌟 Give yourself a few minutes to reflect and ask yourself what YOU need these last few weeks of 2022.
🌟 Remember that it’s okay to say “no” when we need to. Don’t overextend yourself to attend every gathering, pick up every extra shift, or commit to things you may not be able to do right now.
🌟 You don’t need permission to honor yourself first this season.
🌟 This time of year affects us all in different ways, just remember to treat yourself with the kindness you deserve.

X-RAY FRIDAY ANSWER: this dog had a THR (total hip replacement.)
At only 1 year old, Hunter the Husky was diagnosed with hip dysplasia after a history of lameness on his left rear limb. Radiographs showed that he has an abnormal hip joint and the surgeon recommended a total hip replacement. And here is the result! On the right, you can see the artificial joint replacement and how the femoral head fits nicely into the hip joint compared to his pre-operative radiographs on the left. We're wishing Hunter a speedy recovery for the holidays! 💚

Did you know pet insurance claims usually increase around the holiday season? 💸 From chocolate ingestion, a tinsel foreign body, or mistletoe poisoning, an expensive emergency veterinary bill is the last thing you need! A pet insurance plan is the best gift you can get your fur baby this holiday season to ensure if something does happen, you have the financial support you need to save their life.

X-RAY FRIDAY ANSWER: Woody ate a pacifier (and some unidentified bonus material!) Naughty puppy!
Like many lab puppies do, 6-month-old Woody loves to eat things he's not supposed to. He presented for vomiting and lethargy, which was unusual for him. When x-rays were done, we discovered he had ingested a baby pacifier and likely other materials as well. Unfortunately, due to the location and size of the pacifier, he needed to have surgery to remove it. Woody had a successful surgery and recovered surrounded by staff that fell in love with him. He did not pass on any opportunities to be held and cuddled like a baby! 💚

We are SO excited to have a Veterinary Urgent Care nearby in Medford! 🏥🐾 There aren't many urgent care options for pets in the Boston area, so this will be a great resource for pet owners needing prompt care for their pets. Welcome to Massachusetts, VUC!

When should you bring your pet to Urgent Care? If your pet is in a stable condition but still needs same-day or next-day medical attention, urgent care is an excellent option. Some common cases include: vomiting/diarrhea, minor wounds, skin issues, limping, eye & ear infections, UTIs, lumps, and many more. If your pet ends up needing overnight treatment or surgery, VUC can easily help transfer them to an Ethos hospital nearby.

Opening day on the East Coast! 🐾🩺
Today is the day we open the doors of our first urgent care clinic in New England located in Medford, MA at 25 Revere Beach Pkwy! We are excited to expand our urgent care service to the northeast and provide medical care for non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries to dogs & cats in the surrounding cities.

You can read more about our Station Landing clinic and the conditions we treat by visiting our recent press release: urgentpetdoc.com/news-article/ethos-veterinary-health-opens-first-urgent-care-facility-in-new-england/

'Tis the season! 🎄 Decorating for the holidays is exciting, but did you know certain holiday plants and even pet treats can be dangerous for pets? Keep these things out of reach and remember: quality over cuteness! Those red & green rawhides and oversized bones can contain harmful chemicals or cause intestinal blockages in dogs.

X-RAY FRIDAY ANSWER: this cat was treated for a Urethral Obstruction (UO, aka urinary blockage). This is a life-threatening blockage of the lower portion of the urinary tract. Some male cats get recurring blockages, which was unfortunately the case for Toulouse. He had just been discharged from another animal hospital where they had unblocked him when he began straining to urinate again. He was transferred to the VSH team for a Perineal Urethrostomy, or a P/U surgery, which is a surgical method for alleviating urethral obstruction in cats with recurrent blockages. With a low recurrence rate following the procedure, Toulouse should have happier, healthier days ahead! 💚

Meet Gideon! At almost 120 lbs, this gentle giant came in for hot spots and lameness in his paw. Hot spots can occur at any time of year for dogs, though we see them more commonly in summer months. Gideon was sent home with medication and he will be back soon to see our surgery team regarding the lameness. This sweet Mastiff made sure to spread some holiday cheer with kisses under the mistletoe! 🥰

Today is – the day for giving to causes close to your heart! 💚 Cancer has touched the lives of families and pet owners alike, and we hope you'll consider donating to Ethos Discovery who aims to find a cure for complex diseases like cancer in both veterinary and human health care patients. Check out how we're helping patients like Whiskey:

Meet Whiskey, a patient who enrolled in Ethos Discovery's Minimally Invasive Metastasectomy In Canines (MIMIC) trial. 🐾🔬 Whiskey was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (an aggressive type of bone cancer) and also developed lung metastasis. This is when cancer has spread from the original tumor to the lung. Join Koey & Ethos Discovery in the fight against hemangiosarcoma! 👊
Thanks to clinical trial patients like this brave Corgi, we're paving the way for research on this aggressive type of cancer. There have been very little improvements in survival rate for dogs with hemangiosarcoma. Ethos Discovery's goal is to improve the outcome of this disease through studying a variety of treatments and by collaborating with some of the best researchers nationwide, we've been able to create a pipeline to further understanding this disease!

This giving season, and for , we are asking you to consider donating to Ethos Discovery to continue to improve the outcomes of these diseases in our pets! To learn more about Ethos-PUSH, or to make a donation, visit the link below:

X-RAY FRIDAY ANSWER: this patient swallowed a razor blade! 🪒
They presented to our sister hospital in Honolulu where the team was able to safely remove the blade via endoscopy. No surgery was needed which means the patient was able to head home sooner and with a shorter recovery!

Remember to always have your pets be seen by veterinary professionals as soon as possible if you believe they have ingested something they shouldn’t have. This way, the chances of the foreign material still being in the stomach are higher. This can lead to less invasive ways of removal (if possible), like in this patient’s case!

Launching in 2023! 🚀 Very soon, Ethos Discovery will begin work on the Ethos Stratified Outcomes for Lymphoma In Dogs (SOLID) clinical trial. As one of the most common cancers in dogs, canine lymphoma resembles non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in people (veterinarians & doctors even use similar chemotherapy protocols in their patients!) Lymphoma is devastating – the life expectancy in dogs is just a few months.

For and in the season of giving, we're asking you to join us in the fight against lymphoma and other cancers. Please consider donating to Ethos Discovery – 100% of your gift supports medical research! 🔬 Donate or learn more here: https://www.ethosdiscovery.org/opportunities-for-giving/

11/07/2022

Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in cats and dogs. Affecting beloved breeds like Goldens, Boxers, & Bulldogs and making up 33% of tumors in cats, it affects the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and intestinal tract. We're taking today, National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day, to spread awareness of the signs canine lymphoma AND feline lymphoma.

In dogs, lymphoma commonly presents with enlarged peripheral lymph nodes. In cats, it's not so straightforward. Instead of enlarged lymph nodes, it usually presents as more vague problems including progressive lack of appetite, lethargy, and weight loss.

If you think you found something on your dog or if your cat seems "off," don't panic. Schedule a visit with their veterinarian who will know what to do. Early detection is key so don't put off a call to your vet!

Not Your Typical Rescue! Early this morning North Andover 911 received a call for a fox stuck in a sewage grate cover. This young kit named "Rey" was carefully transported while stuck in the grate to Bulger Veterinary Hospital Thank you to Dr. Stephen McGrath and Vet Tech Alexa who sedated "Rey" and were able to manipulate her head back through the grate. "Rey" was provided some IV fluids and antibiotics. She has been transferred to Tufts Wildlife Clinic for further rehab and will be released back in the area where she was found.

You don't think people's fur kids are considered family? The ER is packed with people today, faces wracked with pain and worry. Just saw two families leave sobbing. It's World Veterinarian Day. I'm so thankful for all admin staff, techs, and doctors that help us all. They are as deeply impacted by caring for your fuzzy ones, because they're fur parents and they know how important your family is to you. They celebrate and suffer with you.

My little girl isn't out of the woods yet, but at least she can come home today. Some folks weren't able to do that this afternoon. 😕

I'd like to thank the staff at Bulger Veterinary Hospital and especially DVM Tania Cames who saved my Tapka when she suffered from liver disease and things were already looking very bad. Your staff was very compassionate, helpful, and you did an excellent job while Tapka was in your care. She is now again a healthy and playful kitty!
I would never recommend Bulger Animal. I called yesterday with an emergency with my parakeet only to be told they couldnt take her. They told me to call other places which couldnt take her. I ended up losing my parakeet last night, I know she is only a $20 bird but she was a part of our family. I would never bring an animal to you, even though we were recommended to you.
We will be closing today around 3pm due to the storm and road conditions. If your pet is having a medical emergency please take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital. We recommend Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital and Bulger Veterinary Hospital. These teams take great care of our patients when we are unable to and we ask that you please be patient and kind to their staff. Stay safe!!
We will be closed for the remainder of the day due to the storm. If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please take them to your closest emergency vet hospital. We recommend Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital and Bulger Veterinary Hospital.
We do ask that you have patience and be kind to their awesome staff if your pet does require their services. Wait times can be long on a normal day and even more so during storms and holidays but they do the best they can to help our patients every day.
We're closing today at 12:00 pm, Friday 02/25, due to the weather conditions. We hope you have a safe and fun day playing in the snow with your kids and pups! We look forward to serving you again on Monday 02/28! ❄️

Please don't let your dog chew on sticks! 🪵🚫

A dog with a stick is a classic image we've seen in the media for years. What many pet owners don't know is it can cause a cervical abscess, a common case we see here in New England. This abscess forms when a small piece of the stick breaks off and penetrates the oral mucosa (the skin inside the mouth). The little piece, or sometimes just the bacteria on the piece, can slowly migrate toward the neck and eventually cause a deep infection. And unfortunately, most owners don't realize it's happening until the abscess is already of significant size.

It was suspected that Stella, a 1-year-old Golden Retriever, had recently done just that. Stella presented to our sister hospital, Bulger Veterinary Hospital, for coughing, gagging, and excessive drooling. Radiographs were taken, a CT scan was performed (shown below), and she was diagnosed with a paraoesophagheal abscess, which is an abscess that forms outside or next to the esophagus. Stella was then transferred to Mass Vet for the potential need of an endoscopy and/or surgery.

Stella's medical care involved the Internal Medicine, Critical Care, and Surgery departments - like so much of what we do, it was a real team effort! She underwent an esophageal endoscopy and cervical explore in an attempt to flush and debride any infected tissue. She did very well during surgery, and she is now doing even better in her recovery! Stella's doctor during her recovery, Dr. Beth Eisenberg, was able to spend some quality one-on-one snuggle time with her in the ICU. Once we knew her neck and esophagus were healing well, Stella took every opportunity to steal some snacks! We're all wishing her a speedy recovery. 💚
