🌡️ Heat Stroke in Pets: Know the Signs. Act Fast. 🐶🐱
As summer heats up in Massachusetts, it’s important to remember that our pets can overheat much faster than we do. Heat stroke is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition, but with awareness and quick action, it can often be prevented.
☀️ Prevention Tips:
• Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a minute.
• Avoid midday walks, opt for early mornings or late evenings.
• Make sure pets always have access to fresh water and shade.
• Watch out for hot pavement; it can burn paws and raise body temps quickly.
⚠️ Signs of Heat Stroke in Pets:
• Excessive panting or drooling
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Weakness, stumbling, or collapse
• Bright red or pale gums
• Glazed eyes or confusion
🚨 What to Do If You Suspect Heat Stroke:
Call your veterinarian or visit our emergency department immediately.
Move your pet to a cool, shaded area.
Use cool (not cold) water to gently lower their body temperature; wet towels, fans, or a cool bath can help.
Offer water, but don’t force drinking.
At Bulger Veterinary Hospital, in Lawrence, our emergency team is here 24/7 if your pet needs urgent care. Don’t wait; heat stroke progresses quickly but can be treated when caught early.
