Not Your Typical Rescue! Early this morning North Andover 911 received a call for a fox stuck in a sewage grate cover. This young kit named "Rey" was carefully transported while stuck in the grate to Bulger Veterinary Hospital Thank you to Dr. Stephen McGrath and Vet Tech Alexa who sedated "Rey" and were able to manipulate her head back through the grate. "Rey" was provided some IV fluids and antibiotics. She has been transferred to Tufts Wildlife Clinic for further rehab and will be released back in the area where she was found.
You don't think people's fur kids are considered family? The ER is packed with people today, faces wracked with pain and worry. Just saw two families leave sobbing. It's World Veterinarian Day. I'm so thankful for all admin staff, techs, and doctors that help us all. They are as deeply impacted by caring for your fuzzy ones, because they're fur parents and they know how important your family is to you. They celebrate and suffer with you.
My little girl isn't out of the woods yet, but at least she can come home today. Some folks weren't able to do that this afternoon. 😕
Riverside will be closed tomorrow- Sunday April 17th
If you have an emergency, please reach out to your nearest Emergency facility. It is best to call ahead and they will do all they can to guide and assist you

From all of us at Riverside (& Nutmeg🐰) have a Happy Easter!
I'd like to thank the staff at Bulger Veterinary Hospital and especially DVM Tania Cames who saved my Tapka when she suffered from liver disease and things were already looking very bad. Your staff was very compassionate, helpful, and you did an excellent job while Tapka was in your care. She is now again a healthy and playful kitty!
I would never recommend Bulger Animal. I called yesterday with an emergency with my parakeet only to be told they couldnt take her. They told me to call other places which couldnt take her. I ended up losing my parakeet last night, I know she is only a $20 bird but she was a part of our family. I would never bring an animal to you, even though we were recommended to you.
We will be closing today around 3pm due to the storm and road conditions. If your pet is having a medical emergency please take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital. We recommend Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital and Bulger Veterinary Hospital. These teams take great care of our patients when we are unable to and we ask that you please be patient and kind to their staff. Stay safe!!
We will be closed for the remainder of the day due to the storm. If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please take them to your closest emergency vet hospital. We recommend Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital and Bulger Veterinary Hospital.
We do ask that you have patience and be kind to their awesome staff if your pet does require their services. Wait times can be long on a normal day and even more so during storms and holidays but they do the best they can to help our patients every day.
We're closing today at 12:00 pm, Friday 02/25, due to the weather conditions. We hope you have a safe and fun day playing in the snow with your kids and pups! In the event of a medical emergency, please call Rockingham Emergency Veterinary Hospital (Windham NH) or Bulger Veterinary Hospital (Lawrence MA). We look forward to serving you again on Monday 02/28! ❄️
We will be closed tomorrow, Saturday 1/29, due to the impending storm. (For those of you with pets boarding over the weekend, have no fear.....our amazing Camp Wignall staff will be there to care for your babies.)

Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital
20 Cabot Rd Woburn, MA 01801, 781-932-5802
Bulger Veterinary Hospital
141 Winthrop Ave Lawrence, MA 01843, 978-682-9905

Please don't let your dog chew on sticks! 🪵🚫
A dog with a stick is a classic image we've seen in the media for years. What many pet owners don't know is it can cause a cervical abscess, a common case we see here in New England. This abscess forms when a small piece of the stick breaks off and penetrates the oral mucosa (the skin inside the mouth). The little piece, or sometimes just the bacteria on the piece, can slowly migrate toward the neck and eventually cause a deep infection. And unfortunately, most owners don't realize it's happening until the abscess is already of significant size.
It was suspected that Stella, a 1-year-old Golden Retriever, had recently done just that. Stella presented to our sister hospital, Bulger Veterinary Hospital, for coughing, gagging, and excessive drooling. Radiographs were taken, a CT scan was performed (shown below), and she was diagnosed with a paraoesophagheal abscess, which is an abscess that forms outside or next to the esophagus. Stella was then transferred to Mass Vet for the potential need of an endoscopy and/or surgery.
Stella's medical care involved the Internal Medicine, Critical Care, and Surgery departments - like so much of what we do, it was a real team effort! She underwent an esophageal endoscopy and cervical explore in an attempt to flush and debride any infected tissue. She did very well during surgery, and she is now doing even better in her recovery! Stella's doctor during her recovery, Dr. Beth Eisenberg, was able to spend some quality one-on-one snuggle time with her in the ICU. Once we knew her neck and esophagus were healing well, Stella took every opportunity to steal some snacks! We're all wishing her a speedy recovery. 💚
