🚨 4th of July Is the #1 Day Dogs Go Missing — and Shelters Are CLOSED!
Prep Now — Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late.
More dogs go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year — and shelters are closed at night or all weekend. Even calm, well-trained dogs can panic from fireworks.
Let’s keep our dogs home, safe, cool, and calm this holiday.
Here are some tips
1️⃣ Call Your Vet Now
If your dog has anxiety around loud noises, talk to your vet ASAP.
Some dogs may need medication, while others do great with:
• Calming herbs
• Bach flower remedies
• CBD
• Lavender essential oil
2️⃣ Keep Your Dog Cool
Stress = panting = heat.
Help your dog stay cool with:
• A/C or fans
• Cooling mats
• Cold water
• Frozen treats
3️⃣ Set Up a Calm Space EARLY
Do this before the fireworks start so your dog can settle in:
• Cover crates with a sheet to block light flashes
• Close blackout curtains
• Play calming music (like 432 Hz on YouTube) or white noise
• Use a ThunderShirt or calming pressure wrap
4️⃣ Keep the Leash ON — Even in the Yard
Yes, even in fenced areas.
Always use a collar and leash.
5️⃣ Lock Down Your Home
Double-check that all:
✅ Doors
✅ Windows
✅ Screens
✅ Gates
are fully closed and secure.
6️⃣ Update ID Tags
Make sure your dog’s collar has current info.
👉 Bonus tip: Tape your phone number on with Gorilla Tape for extra visibility.
7️⃣ Check Microchips & GPS
• Make sure your info is up to date on the microchip registry
• Fully charge GPS collars and test that they’re working
8️⃣ licking to reduce anxiety Try:
• Licky mats
• Frozen treats
9️⃣ Exercise Early
A tired dog is a calmer dog.
Get in a long walk or play session earlier in the day.
🔟 Bonus Sound Tricks
• Toss tennis balls in the dryer for a calming rhythm
• Turn up an action movie to drown out fireworks
Let’s keep our dogs safe, calm, cool, and HOME this July 4th.
