With these four boy rats leaving with previous adopters of ours for their new digs on the Westside, all of the rats who were showcased on the 9/26 KTLA 5 Weekend Morning News broadcast at Discovery Cube Los Angeles with founder Christine have left SBRR!

We wish these squishy Dumbo dudes all the ear scratches and cuddles as they go on to live their best lives.

We have to go Edna Mode mode on today's PSA.

Proper RAT cages are wire ones with short bar spacing (preferably under 1/2") to keep air flowing and give your them plenty of room to climb and play! 🐀✨ One of the best cage models for this? A Midwest Critter Nation or one of a similar build.

So, why are glass/acrylic tanks a bad idea for rats?

- Poor Ventilation: Tanks trap heat, moisture, and ammonia from urine, creating stagnant air that leads to severe respiratory infections (rats have very sensitive lungs!).

- Limited Climbing Space: Rats are natural climbers and burrowers. Glass walls provide zero opportunity for climbing, hanging hammocks, or vertical exercise.

- Sense Deprivation: Rats rely heavily on smell and sound to navigate. High glass walls block ambient sounds and air currents, leaving them feeling isolated.

- Overheating Risk: Glass acts like a greenhouse, trapping heat easily and putting rats at high risk for heatstroke. Seriously, we just had several heatwaves here in LA and it was hard enough keeping our rat room in the low 80s with all fans and A/C on. The open nature of our Critter Nation cages were a lifesaver. Nobody likes baked rats. We sure don't.

- Difficult Cleaning: Hard-to-reach corners make thorough cleaning difficult, allowing bacteria and odor to build up quickly compared to wire cages.

We've been delaying/denying adoption approvals due to improper habitats! We care for the safety of our animals and do everything within our control to ensure that they transition to good homes where they will thrive.

If you're a mouse or hamster owner, this doesn't apply to you. Carry on with your little furry buddies.

Sunday sent off four rats to their forever homes! Two boys went to a Moorpark College student for their animal behavior class after they completed their time with us entertaining Discovery Cube patrons with their cute personalities and majestic ears.

Additionally, our lovely lady rat ambassador, Panda 🐼, and one of her little cagemates went home to a previous adopter of ours. Panda's energy will be quite welcome in her next mischief and we know that she'll have a wonderful time with her new family.

We'd like to send an extra thank you to Discovery Cube Los Angeles for acting as an intermediary space for us to complete pre-approved adoption pickups and for continuing to support our mission to "rescue, educate, and adopt" our small rodents. Due to our extremely wide coverage area, it's easier for some adopters to meet us in Sylmar to pick up their new fuzzy companions rather than come all the way down to Lawndale to see us.

Hello, y'all. We're pretty close to full and are working on reducing our numbers. We still want to help, so courtesy posts are happening now for people who need to rehome creatures but can still take care of them for the time being.

This little boy was rescued from the Petco in Redondo Beach because he was being bullied by his cagemates. Unfortunately, now the cats in his temporary home in Torrance are wanting to bully him as well. That means he's looking for a bully-free environment. Can you help?

We just noticed that he has black eyes instead of that typical PEW (pink-eyed white) variation we've all come to know. That's quite fun.

Meet Panda! 🐼🐀

We acquired her from Mid-City/Hollywood a few days ago thanks to a landlord who found her after she was abandoned by a tenant. It turns out that she's lived the last six months with no rat friends, so we solved that quickly by introducing her to a group of rat ladies. It's been a long time since we've had a rat perk up at popcorn at will after being added to our rescue.

It also turns out that she is very friendly and loves scratches from people. The kids have had lots of fun meeting her this weekend at El Dorado Nature Center and the Discovery Cube.

If you'd like to adopt her, she must go with a few friends. Who wants to take her home?

Happy Sunday! We're at Discovery Cube Los Angeles today with the rats until 2pm. We were also busy this week with some adoptions, sending three little boys to a family who needed new friends for their senior rat and two girls to a Moorpark College student for their animal behavior class.

Wednesday's adoption appointments led to ten lady ratties going to their .

- A pair of girls went to a Moorpark College student for class.

- Five girls also went to a Moorpark College student! This also cleared a cage. One of the girls was a recent add to our rescue as she was found abandoned in an apartment complex in Bellflower. Thankfully, the other four girls welcomed her to the mischief and now everyone gets to stay together!

- Three ladies go to a young lady whose mom once had rats. We're happy to see another generation experience the happiness these little critters bring.

We still have more rats! Please help us clear more cages!
