We sent five ratties to their today!

Three lovely baby dudes went to a first-time rat family down the street! To say that these boys are just lovely is an absolute understatement. They're from an oops litter, but their previous family made sure that they were handleable before they came to us. Also, we made sure they stayed together as a trio. Their mother and remaining sister is still with us along with 14 other siblings in a new litter born last Sunday. We have no idea where mom put them all. 😳 Also, their dad was neutered on Wednesday and is currently recovering at the original owners' house as part of a pet retention plan we've set up. Once mama is done raising the other kids, she and her oldest daughter will return to the family as well.

One of our previously adopted ladies, a 1.75 yr. old Himalayan, came back to us recently. She was re-adopted along with one of the older daughters that came from the Bellflower dumping rescue back at the end of June. They will be joining other girl rats in a nice large cage.

Lastly, two girls that were adopted back in October 2022 (that's not a typo) were returned to us because their owner is heading to college across the country. They were born in June 2022 and weren't expected to live that long. But not to worry, they'll be in permanent sanctuary with one of our long-time fosters who know a thing or two about ADA rat compliant cages and spoiling older ratties.

For extra credit, we have three girls hanging out with the same fosters in "rattie boot camp" to improve their social skills with humans. School's starting for many hoomans so we're going to send the ratties for a few extra lessons.

We have a fun term for pregnant mama ratties here at .

They are referred to as "value packs." 🐀🫘

This lovely lady popped on Sunday afternoon and we are still boggled as to how many she had baking in there.

For those who guessed less than double digits for kiddos, you automatically lost. 🤣 We think there's at least a dozen in there. We're probably wrong and there has to be more...

That makes three mama rats giving birth here in four weeks. We're out the ears in babies. 🎂

Five out the door for Monday to new !

Three lovely ladies will get tons of attention from young kids who will enjoy cuddling them. Two of them began their journey here at so we're excited to see all of them begin their next chapter with a new family.

A pair of sweet boys, one neutered, one not, and both very squishy, will be spoiled by a pair of high school students. They enjoy shoulders and hiding in your hair while they brux and boggle approvingly.

We're happy to see two cages get cleared. We're working on reducing our numbers so we can be ready for any potential emergencies and also have room for the baby rats in our care. We'd love to see more leave! DM us or send an adoption inquiry form through our website today!

No, we're not thrilled about the tsunami warning either. But the waves would have to completely engulf Manhattan Beach before they can even take a swipe at us so we're pretty sure .

So here are some pics to think of happier things.

(1) Agoura Girl had her babies on Monday morning! 🐀🫘 If you guessed that she had nine little beans, you win!

(2) Two of our resident dudes, Wonton and Gyoza, enjoy some kale during cage cleaning time.

(3) One of the lady rats who's boarding here for vacation is wondering what we did with all her p**p.

We had two lovely eight month old girls join a new friend here after she recently lost her cagemate. Coffee (pictured) and Hazel 🌈🐀 arrived two months ago due to Hazel's growing mammary tumor and financial hardship in covering tumor removal. Thanks to funding from The Marion & Richard Graham Foundation, we covered Hazel's surgery costs in hopes of reuniting them with their family.

Unfortunately, Hazel did not survive the surgery, leaving Coffee by herself. That is, until these two ladies showed up. They're a spunky, curious pair who enjoy climbing into baskets and snuggling hammocks. They're a fun contrast to Coffee's chill temperament, but we do hope that some of that will rub off on these young ones.

Also, just throwing it out there, but our dudes Goose and Ducky, a pair of 1.5 year old-ish boys who were displaced by the Eaton Fire in January, are still looking for their . Goose will snuggle with you all the time and Ducky will reach a level of understanding, but both of these brothers love each other very much and need to stay together. DM us if you're interested!

It's been a bit of an up and down week. But let's talk about the up parts.

We received eight babies from an oops litter last weekend, and the first two boys from that group went to a pair of experienced rat owners looking to bring rats back into their home again. They will be spoiled and loved.

We went to for a checkup on Murdock, one of our single dudes who was recently neutered. He's a nice guy and loves cuddling with people, but other rats irk him. It's most likely because he's blind and feels like he's being snuck up on. He'll be available for a once he heals up. We also have a pair of dudes here to evaluate for neutering as well to calm their nervous potato selves down.

It's been a bittersweet week for us, but we're still here taking care of all the rattos. Our recent adoptions have made things a lot brighter here.

- One of our previous adopters returned for a couple more ladies and went home with our amazing Mama Sandi and the teeniest girl from our Bellflower dumping rescue. If you've been following us, Mama Sandi is the foster mom who saved a litter of newborn babies after their biological mom passed suddenly and raised them to maturity. She finally gets her , and we are grateful for her service. And the little lady is just, well, adorably .

- A pair of brothers headed out to a first-time rat owner to be cuddled and spoiled.

- And let's not forget the remaining four brothers in that cage! They're headed to Kern County as first rats for a new owner. Yes, we have adopters who drive from a distance, and we are happy to provide all those who see us with full service!

One of SBRR's greatest checked out of the earthly hotel this week, and she will be sorely missed.

Ophelia the Rat 🐀 crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday, and although we don't know exactly when she was born in early 2022, she was estimated to be close to 3.5 years old. She was one of Christine's personal heart rats and was saved from becoming danger noodle 🐍 dinner when she adopted her as her own. (Yes, she was "just" a stereotypical feeder!) Her sweet temperament and personality made her a keeper, and it made her a wonderful rodent representative and awesome with children. Her other pursuits also include inner ear inspections and guerilla rodentistry, but only when she was at home and nobody else was watching.

For those who have attended our off-site events since 2022 from LA to Pasadena to Orange County, you will have probably petted Ophelia and scratched her ears as she hung out with volunteers. She was a favorite among the staff at Discovery Cube LA. As she got older, she enjoyed cuddling in volunteers' arms and basking in all the attention.

Her contributions to rat education and breaking down rodent stereotypes are immense. She is the first rat from SBRR to appear in a movie film shoot. She holds the record for the most appearances by any rat at an off-site event, with her final event being the Lawndale Pet Fair in June. And when she was supposed to retire from off-site events last October, she stuck around to teach her younger cagemates how to engage with the public.

She's back home with her original cage buddies, Gertrude and Kiwi, and probably shuffling papers around their cage while running across tables.

Run free, sweet Ophelia. We're pretty sure that Old Man Patch greeted you with a nice jar of yogies. ❤️

We had a few ratties leave over the last few days, and we're happy to see where they headed off to.

- Two young girl rats from the recent dumping in Bellflower two weeks ago have healed from their ear mites and will be joining a new friend who was saved from becoming a danger noodle's lunch.

- A pair of squishy young rat brothers are now a young boy's new furry friends/first rats and will grow up with him. Their chill temperament will help with the trust and socialization process, and we're confident that they'll grow up to be lovely squishies.

- Our longest tenured single male rat, who has been here since July 2024, is headed to the Central Coast to live with a pair of older dudes looking for a new friend. Crowley will enjoy an upgrade from a studio apartment solo to a Critter Nation penthouse with roommates.

We thank you for your support and will be in contact with our latest adoption inquiries shortly to get the process started.
