Skye has her first Shockwave treatment today and it couldn't have gone better! So grateful to Dr. Lotsikas and his team at Skylos Sports Medicine for working with us to ensure she was comfortable. Things that helped make this a success:
✴️We tested Skye's response to the sound of the device in advance and determined she would need the Rex Specs Ear Pros.
✴️We conditioned her to the Ear Pros and did two practice sessions while she received massage therapy.
✴️Out of an abundance of caution, we premedicated her to ensure she was relaxed throughout.
✴️We discussed ideal positioning, time it would take, and whether we could give her a break if needed before we started.
✴️I was able to position her using known cues onto the ortho bed I had brought for her.
✴️The tech used her hands to keep Skye stable in the upright down position, but didn't restrain her.
✴️I fed her throughout to keep her happy wearing the Ear Pros, but fed at a pace that allowed her to be aware of what was going on and protest if she was uncomfortable.
✴️We started on a lower intensity to make sure she wasn't surprised/tolerated it, then increased from there.
✴️After about 500 shocks she started to fidget so we took a break for a few minutes.
✴️While she rested, we discussed stopping there or trying for 700 (the ideal amount in terms of treatment) and agreed to continue, but stop if she appeared uncomfortable.
We were able to do the full 700 shocks. Other than that brief moment before the break, she was relaxed, taking treats gently, and content with her Ear Pros on.
Note that Shockwave is generally well tolerated by dogs. With the newer devices, sedation generally isn't needed unless the dog is sound sensitive. I would trust the team at Skylos to keep Skye comfortable without me, but being able to be with her removes her anxiety of being separated from me, it reduces MY anxiety over a new procedure, and it gives us a set of eyes dedicated solely to assessing her comfort and stress level.
