Our last trial of the spring as it's getting too hot for Skye. We look forward to more sniffy fun in the fall. Meanwhile, a L1 Interior title was a nice way to end the season.

Skye had her second shockwave treatment (and did great!). We had a little downtime in the room before we checked out, so we took advantage and did some short periods of her getting fed for wearing her Ear Pros.

We're still doing this at home as well so she doesn't start to associate wearing them with her treatments. Practice sessions to "recharge the battery" after using a trained behavior in a higher pressure situation are always a good idea!

Skye has her first Shockwave treatment today and it couldn't have gone better! So grateful to Dr. Lotsikas and his team at Skylos Sports Medicine for working with us to ensure she was comfortable. Things that helped make this a success:

✴️We tested Skye's response to the sound of the device in advance and determined she would need the Rex Specs Ear Pros.
✴️We conditioned her to the Ear Pros and did two practice sessions while she received massage therapy.
✴️Out of an abundance of caution, we premedicated her to ensure she was relaxed throughout.
✴️We discussed ideal positioning, time it would take, and whether we could give her a break if needed before we started.
✴️I was able to position her using known cues onto the ortho bed I had brought for her.
✴️The tech used her hands to keep Skye stable in the upright down position, but didn't restrain her.
✴️I fed her throughout to keep her happy wearing the Ear Pros, but fed at a pace that allowed her to be aware of what was going on and protest if she was uncomfortable.
✴️We started on a lower intensity to make sure she wasn't surprised/tolerated it, then increased from there.
✴️After about 500 shocks she started to fidget so we took a break for a few minutes.
✴️While she rested, we discussed stopping there or trying for 700 (the ideal amount in terms of treatment) and agreed to continue, but stop if she appeared uncomfortable.

We were able to do the full 700 shocks. Other than that brief moment before the break, she was relaxed, taking treats gently, and content with her Ear Pros on.

Note that Shockwave is generally well tolerated by dogs. With the newer devices, sedation generally isn't needed unless the dog is sound sensitive. I would trust the team at Skylos to keep Skye comfortable without me, but being able to be with her removes her anxiety of being separated from me, it reduces MY anxiety over a new procedure, and it gives us a set of eyes dedicated solely to assessing her comfort and stress level.

Wynnie is back for another week-long stay. We keep our boarders healthy. 😝

I can't say it enough - I am so grateful to have an amazing team of people who care for Skye! Dr. Thompson at Chiropractic was kind enough to let us test out Skye's reaction to their Shockwave device. It's not quite as loud as the one that will be used, but it gave us the information we needed, which is that she is concerned about the noise without her Ear Pros, but with the Ear Pros it didn't register.

So today we did a trial of her wearing them for 2 short periods while getting her massage (90 sec and 60 sec). My question was just, could she wear them calmly without signs of stress while I fed her, and choose to stay on the bed. There was some VERY mild stress, taking treats a little hard the first few times and doing a shake off each time the Ear Pros were removed. Otherwise she sailed through it.

Wednesday she will have her first Shockwave treatment. The wonderful team at have arranged for me to be in the room with Skye, so I will be able to make sure she is comfortable throughout. It really takes a village!

Welcome Izzy! We'll be working with Izzy's people to help her adjust to adopted life with 2 cats. 🐕‍🦺🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ She's been a little shell shocked after her journey to home life while also dealing with multiple parasites and a tick born disease, but she is starting to come out of her shell as she feels better. She is whip smart and was happy to engage in some training, so we are looking forward to seeing more of that personality emerge.

So proud of this girl today. 5/5 Q's at her first full day of Level 3 CPE Scentwork. 15 hides total, and she searched so well. Comments from the judges were "super duper" and "she's such a good little searcher". ❤️
