NEW STUDY FOUND!

Study Highlights:
• Most product labels (21/22) included minimum content claims for eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid concentrations, and six of those products did not meet the minimum claim for one or both fatty acids.
• PCBs and most heavy metals were not detected. Essential minerals as well as arsenic were detected in some samples; however, the concentrations of these components are likely of low concern.
• There were detectable concentrations of vitamins a and d in some products, not all of which were labeled with claims for minimum amounts. Clinicians should be aware of fish oil supplements as a potential source of these vitamins.
• Fish oil supplements for pets are regulated as animal feeds, but the presence of vitamins and minerals in these products is often not disclosed to consumers. In addition, label guarantees for fatty acids as well as vitamins a and d were sometimes not met, and these issues warrant attention from both manufacturers and from regulators.
