This bird was one of my pets. He had this area in the shop and he went to and from work with me. We anyone would approach him he would say “come here”, as you know birds learn to mimic your voice and he was used to me saying that to him when I would go to him. So we had a customer Mrs. Black with a little silver poodle named Pierre and a young boy. One day as she was bringing Pierre in for grooming her little boy was standing looking at the bird and the bird said “come here”. The little boy went over to his mom and said “Mommy he wants me to go in there”, to which she answered “you can’t”. So he went back over to the bird area and again the bird said “come here”, the little boy said “I can’t”, again the bird said “come here” and the boy raised his voice and said, “my mom said I CAN’T!”. So funny! Another time when the little fella came in and said “I’m here for Pierre”, whoever was helping him in the front asked for his last name, the boy looked confused and then answered “ he’s just a little dog named Pierre, he does t have a last name”❤️.

If not for my mother’s urging me I never would’ve opened my own shop. I did always obey her though and she made up her mind that I was going to do this! Both she and my stepdad “Mike” spent countless hours helping me. They both worked at the test site so they were gone 12 hours a day but every evening when they got home they came to the shop, did the bookwork helped me clean, brought freshly laundered towels and picked up the dirty ones. Then they would walk one block passing out flyers that we had made promoting the business. The flyer had a $5.00 coupon and offered a dozen free doughnuts to anyone who brought their dog in on Sunday. That was our marketing budget, 1000 flyers and doughnuts! Yes, that first year we were open 7 days a week. Mom and Mike worked Saturday and Sunday helping me bathe and brush as well. My mother always told me “If you do a good job for a fair price and a little bit extra you will always have work”. This applied to my babysitting jobs as well. She would tell me when the kids get to sleep straighten up the house let them come home to an orderly house. She always gave me great advise. A lot of hard work and a lot of great memories ❤️

This is Charlie Grauberger. When I was in the 7th grade at Garside Junior High School Mr. Grauberger was my Current Events teacher. We had a “Career Day” and we were to talk about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I was already dog grooming, I had been at it for 3 years. Mr. Grauberger has always had poodles and he brought one of his little silver miniature poodles to school on Career Day and I gave her a hair cut 😊. I think I’ve been grooming his poodles ever since. If any of you were lucky enough to have had him for a teacher I’m sure you count him as one of your favorite teachers ever, he’s one of the best❤️

This was in 1975 at a grooming contest in San Diego CA. In those days we used the Oster A-2 clipper with detachable heads. They were the best. Blades never got hot and they ran forever, all you had to do was change the brushes and eventually a new armature. You don’t see many poodles anymore with the styles that were so popular in those days.

This is a picture taken in front of the shop in approximately 1992. The lamb lived at Opportunity Village and we sheared him twice a year. The gentleman was his handler one of the students at Opportunity Village. We would put a drop cloth in the floor and I would be on one side and Bev on the other and we got him done and ready to go back home in about 30 minutes. He was 1 of 2 sheep that I’ve had come to dogs by Cindy over the years 😊. Fun times!
