Every year, countless pets go missing, leaving their owners distraught and anxious. Losing a pet is a heart-wrenching experience that no pet parent should have to endure. That's why National Lost Pet Prevention Month, observed every July, serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of pet identification, responsible ownership, and proactive measures to keep our furry friends safe.
Microchipping: A Lifesaver for Our Pets
Microchipping is a safe and simple procedure that involves implanting a tiny electronic chip beneath a pet's skin. This chip contains a unique identification number linked to the owner's contact information. In case a pet goes missing and is found, veterinary clinics, shelters, and animal control agencies can scan the microchip to reunite the pet with its owner. National Lost Pet Prevention Month is an ideal time for pet owners to ensure their companions are microchipped and that the information associated with the chip is up to date.
Visible Identification: Collars and Tags
While microchipping is essential, it's equally important for pets to wear visible identification. A sturdy collar with an engraved tag displaying the owner's name and phone number can significantly increase the chances of a lost pet being returned. National Lost Pet Prevention Month encourages pet parents to regularly check their pet's collar and tags for signs of wear and tear, ensuring they remain legible and securely attached.
Responsible Pet Ownership
Preventing pet loss begins with responsible pet ownership. This includes maintaining a secure and pet-friendly environment at home, such as a well-fenced yard and securely latched gates. Additionally, it's vital to keep pets on leashes or in appropriate enclosures when outdoors. Spaying or neutering pets also helps reduce their desire to roam, minimizing the risk of getting lost.
Utilizing Technology: Pet-Finding Apps and Social Media
The advent of technology has revolutionized the way we approach lost pet prevention. Pet-finding apps and websites, along with social media platforms, have become invaluable tools in reuniting lost pets with their owners. By utilizing these platforms, pet parents can post information about their missing pets, share photos, and reach a wider audience, exponentially increasing the chances of a successful reunion.
National Lost Pet Prevention Month reminds us that we can all make a collective effort to prioritize the well-being of our beloved pets, not just during this month but throughout the year, ensuring they remain fur-ever by our side.
If you have any questions about pet loss prevention or would like to make an appointment to microchip your pet, call us at 702-453-1220 today!

04/03/2024

To help raise public awareness with the beginning of the mosquito season, April is being recognized as Heartworm Prevention Month.

Heartworm, a serious and often fatal disease of dogs, cats, and other species of mammals, is preventable.

While the prevalence of heartworm disease historically has been high in the South, it is now on the rise throughout the rest of the United States, including regions that were once considered non-endemic. According to the American Heartworm Society, a study done in 2022 states that heartworm disease has now been found in dogs in all 50 states.

Are indoor pets at risk?
It is important to realize that even pets that are exclusively indoor pets, may still be at risk because of mosquitoes that make their way indoors by entering through doorways and windows or landing on clothes or humans entering the home.

Heartworm Disease is Preventable!
Because heartworm disease is completely preventable, the AHS recommends that pet owners take steps now to talk to their veterinarian about how to best protect their pets from this dangerous disease. According to the AHS, heartworm prevention is safe, easy, and inexpensive compared to treating a dog or cat after heartworms have matured into adults.

Visit your VCA veterinarian to discuss your heartworm prevention options to keep your furry family member healthy!

March is Pet Poison Prevention month!

It’s not something we like to think about, but there are a number of items in and around our homes that are poisonous to pets. With any potential dangers or toxins, it is important to keep them out of paws’ reach. While accidents can happen, the less accessible these items are, the less likely your pet is to get into them.

Listed below are the top 10 toxins to pets in 2022 and 2023 according the the ASPCA Animal Poison control and the Pet Poison Control helpline. Accidents are called accidents for a reason but keeping these products out of paw’s reach can decrease the number of accidents we see in a year and keep your pets safe at home.

If you suspect your pet may have ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435, or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661 immediately.
