Animal Advocates of Northern NM Building a paws-itive community

Sara Jo was called on this doggie that had a canister stuck on its head and needed help. Animal Advocates and community members began keeping an eye out for him but had not seen him. Yesterday Monica received a call that the dog was spotted, and needless to say Laura, Ashley, Monica, Reina, and a couple other community members immediately went to find and help him. Ashley and Laura crawled in the bushes and almost secured the dog, however he was scared, and went into the culvert. Officer Rodney Perea and ACO Leroy Ortega offered to step in and place a live trap at the site. Officer Ortega stayed near the trap for a few hours and was able to safely trap the dog, remove the canister, and transport him to the shelter. Thank you everyone who sprung into action to save this poor dog….it takes team work to make change 🐶🐱❤️

If only we could share all the interesting situations we come across in animal rescue. However, this case of the mixed up dogs is kind of funny, but had a happy ending. These two dogs had both been posted on Facebook, one had escaped his yard, and the other showed up in someone’s yard. Monica reached out to the owner of the missing dog, thinking maybe the found one may be his, but it wasn’t. Monica went to scan the found dog, and with the help of AWC, was able to contact the person the dog was registered to. Upon calling this person, he told Monica that his dog was at home. Monica and this man had exchanged these pictures of the dogs and were so confused because they looked so much alike. Monica investigated and found out that both dogs had went missing around the 4th of July. However, a friend of this man had recently picked up a dog and took it to him thinking it was his. He stated it looked like his dog, but its personality was different, and he thought it was because he had been lost. He also stated where his friend found the dog, which was about a block away from where the other dog got out of his yard. Monica thought possibly the dog he had was the wrong dog, and filled him in on the facts about the other dog that had escaped and was missing. Monica scanned the dog he had….and sure enough it wasn’t his dog. Monica called the other gentleman who was missing his dog to come over and see this dog, and it turned out is was his dog. Then Monica and the other man drove to where the other dog was and that was his dog. Both doggies went to their rightful owners and homes safe and sound. The mystery was solved 😁 Thank you Leo Montoya for your donation to Animal Advocates.

Our group learned a hard lesson today. As animal advocates we always bond and get attached to every animal we come across. Each has a unique story and if we could responsibly keep them all, we absolutely would. Fostering isn’t easy. Sometimes a dog stays with you for days, sometimes it’s months. In some of our cases, nobody wanted them at all and they became ours by default. That’s the risk we run when we take them on. Most of the time, little dogs are sought after and the big dogs are discarded like trash. Well this case is no different. This dog was tied at the wildlife refuge and rescued by a sweet bystander. It was so late at night and despite our best efforts we couldn’t secure a foster. One person stepped up and offered. We know this person and although we don’t have the best relationship…we put our best foot forward for the pup and trusted them to foster temporarily. We made sure she was aware it’s temporary. Once we secure a foster we move quickly to get them seen by a vet, and prepare to have them adopted if they’re healthy. The foster knew this and like we all experience, she started falling in love with this particular dog. We informed her that people were interested and if they fell through we would consider her for adoption. We usually always allow our fosters the option to adopt first but this was different. We know this person already has animals of her own and we already know adopting another dog would be irresponsible of US. Immediately someone inquired about permanently adopting her. We secured the vet visit, got her vaccinated, are working to get her spayed and did a routine checkup. It seemed this dog would be in her new home in good time and we could relieve the foster of her responsibility. However things quickly changed and escalated. Today the foster decided she wanted to keep the dog. There was a post made of Facebook about how we’re ripping this dog away, how we’re breaking their bond, how the dog doesn’t even know the people adopting her etc. Many people encouraged her to keep the dog and withhold it from us. First, we move heaven and earth to ensure our dogs are going to good homes. We vet these adopters HARD. We check their criminal history, ensure they can provide for them and still check on them even after adoption. Second, there was a different way to go about this. Just deciding to take matters into your own hands and withhold a dog from us shows so much instability. Not to mention the fact that she already has 5 dogs and we were willing to help her get them situated because she’s already struggling to care for them. To say we’re breaking a bond and not thinking of the dog is completely wrong. It is YOU that was selfish and chose to try and ruin a loving and devoted home for this dog. You almost stole this opportunity from her because you can’t differentiate between your wants and this dogs needs. Lastly, to all the people that told her to withhold the dog and to keep it…shame on YOU. We paid for her, we provide supplies, we searched for a kind of loving home, we provided vet care and spent hours getting her this opportunity. She is under our groups name at the veterinarian and we received donations for her care so encouraging her to keep her from us is STEALING!

Law enforcement was contacted and she was quickly returned. We would like to thank Chief Marquez and Officer Michael Ortega for helping us get her back. She is now safe in her new home. We don’t post this to shame the foster, but to clear ourselves of some of the false comments on that post. We also post this to say things could have been so different in this situation if you would’ve acted appropriately but because of your own actions, trust was severely broken. Fostering and doing this type of work is HARD. It’s not for everybody. But most importantly it’s one of the most SELFLESS things you could ever do. This volunteer work often comes with breaking your own heart when you know it’s the right thing to do for the animal you’re raising above yourself.

Edited to add: all week, all night and into this morning this individual continues to slander, harass and threaten a member of Animal Advocates and our group as a whole.

🚨Looking for this girls owner🚨

Female dog found. She’s not chipped and has apparently been wandering in for at least a couple of days - has been seen on Tilden and at the Skillet, now on 3rd Street. She’s on the smaller side. Good with other dogs and children. Seems easygoing for someone older who wants a sweet companion. Pink or faded red collar. She has blood on her paw and is limping slightly. Looks like she has an injury by her claw. Very friendly and wanting to please. Gets in and out of the car on her own. Listens well.

This sweet and loving girl was reported to have been tied up, and left to fend for herself by a dumpster out near the wildlife refuge a few days ago along with another larger pittie mix. A good samaritan was able to catch the pittie, but this girl stayed behind until another kind person was able to catch her. She was saved right in time as coyotes were seen in the area. We’re really not sure she would be alive today with the looming threat of predators nearby. Monica was able to offer advice/guidance with the situation, and then secure and transport this cutie to our foster late last night. Animal Advocates will cover veterinary care and the foster support she needs until we can place her in a loving home. If you’re interested in adopting this cutie pie, send us a message. We’d love to facilitate a forever home for her. As always, we will be posting our donation Venmo link below. Our group is only able to continue this work with the generosity and love of our community. We appreciate every single person that supports our efforts!

This sweet girl was spayed and vaccinated today but is still looking for her forever home and family. She weighs 35lbs and is about 7 months old. She was abused and abandoned, and is currently homeless and living outside in a mobile home lot. She’s good around other dogs and doesn’t even bother the outdoor cats. She’s so loving and friendly but still a little unsure of humans, however, she warms up quickly. If you can love her forever and make her a part of your family please message.
