Day 2: Uni's journey from abandoned at 12 weeks old, to surviving parvo, & kicking butt at training!

The most rewarding part of dog training is being able to watch dogs and owners building a bond that will last a lifetime!

With proper training and handling skills, our dogs will forever have the freedom to be taken anywhere and everywhere to go on adventures with us instead of having to stay home because they just aren't enjoyable outside of the home.

It's NEVER too late to start! No dog is too old to learn new skills.

Uni's first time heeling with heavy distractions without me handling him.

Uni knows how to heel with me under heavy distractions, but that doesn't mean he is trained. It simply means he respects the rules I have given him, and he understands my body language very well. Heeling with mom and dad who aren't dog trainers is very different.

Training dogs is the easy part of dog training, being able to make it relatable to their humans is the difficult part. Any decent trainer can teach a dog and make it look good, the skill lies within being able to also communicate effectively with the humans who will be handling the dog.

Today's skills:
*Leash management
*Engagement

You can't heel a dog if you can't first manage a leash.

If you lose engagement, you lose attention, the command degrades.

The first step towards a trained dog is CLARITY. You have to be able to communicate with the dog in front of you, not just work a "training system". Not all dogs will accept a leash which is generally where we start. A leash would cause her to cower and p*e so we started off with what she wanted.... treats. Anxious dogs require a special touch when it comes to training. They must have complete clarity of what is being asked before non compliance can be corrected and understood.

In this clip I am mostly using my body to get the dog to do what I want her to do as well as not do, without saying much aside from marking the correct behavior. At the end I tested some luring which was also a good fit for this dog. It doesn't take her long to realize that jumping = me moving away and ignoring her and sitting = treats.

Every dog is different and will require a different training plan.
